Tiger/toxin/spines
stashing some tidbits here until i get more written: The Shade is not really a sentient being and is more akin to a parasite that consumes magic. Large enough accumulations of Shade can develop rudimentary, more complex behaviors bordering on sentience, and living organisms infected by the Shade can incur a range of effects, from an acute and/or fully purged infection that sucks out almost all of their inherent magic (Caleb) to a chronic and/or managed infection that causes physical damage and erratic mental effects but not full loss of self (Saiorse) to full possession and takeover (▓▓▓▓▓▓). Posessed organisms exhibit feral, animalistic, highly aggressive behavior and near-constant hunger, and will seek out concentrated sources of magic to consume. For dragons, which are reliant on elemental magic to maintain their vital processes, a severe Shade infection can be devastating and is often fatal if untreated, and treatment for a Shade infection is a highly complex and delicate process. Recovered infection victims also frequently lose at least some level of magical function and sustain lasting physical and mental damage. Other sapient species like Beastclans, who can channel elemental magic but are not reliant on it to live, are still vulnerable to infection and possession but generally sustain much less severe effects and can more easily recover -- Baldwin's brew works to innoculate Beastclans and other organisms but not dragons for this reason. Any being that can use magic can also draw on the Shade by deliberately infecting themselves and using its magic-absorbing abilities to amplify their own power; in exchange for losing their previous elemental affinity, they can allow a Shade infection to consume their magic and, through careful study and meditation, weaponize it in their favor. These alliances with the Shade are delicate balances -- the Shade has no conception of how much is too much to take, and magic users who choose to make pacts with it are always only a hair's breadth from falling over the edge into being consumed entirely.
More rarely, the Shade can also take control of dead bodies. While most dead dragons dissipate their magic rapidly and are no longer an appealing source of food, exceptionally magically powerful corpses can occasionally provide enough sustenance for the Shade to move in. The bodies of Trekka's murdered sons, which contained two different strains of elemental magic donated by a pair of incredibly powerful parents, were one of these exceptional food sources and were infested by Shade-touched fungi after being buried. Quillan, who had been the second of the brothers to be killed and had fought back more fiercely against the attacker, was in much worse condition and quickly fell apart, but Arddun's body was in good enough shape that the fungus was able to spread throughout it and eventually (sort of) reanimate it into a shambling mess of a beast. While his body is partially decayed, the influence of the Shade has stopped it from deteriorating any further; it draws power from the remaining elemental magic in his corpse, which in turn is able to draw enough energy from the Shade infection and the latent plague magic in its surroundings to keep circulating in a continuous feedback loop.
