Biography
Price to Plague
Beatrice, Plagued
|
Beatrice's tale is a popular one in the taverns of Fogbound Close. It's one she herself has told many times, and it's been repeated and exaggerated many times more. Those who have never met Beatrice say that on the day her ship clashed with an opposing Clan from the Scarred Wasteland, Beatrice was a cook's apprentice on a pirate vessel. Her escape from the battle that ended the lives of nearly all of her crewmates, then, was a stroke of luck, as Beatrice would have been below board when the fighting started. The real story, Beatrice says, is much grimmer. She was no cook's apprentice, to start- she had been a private at the time, serving within a proud Lightning Clan aboard a merchant-only vessel. They were not pirates, and they were not warriors. That was why the vicious attack on their ship had been such a surprise: Beatrice's crew expected to be given the chance to surrender. They were mistaken. |
Instead, the unknown plague vessel swarmed over the merchant vessel like flies on rot. The fighters of that ship were all clad in dark garments that disguised their faces, and the weapons they used were strange ones. No dragon wielded sword or even claw. Instead, they lobbed glass orbs filled with brightly colored liquids at their foes and flew away. It didn't take long to see why, because as soon as the glass orbs shattered, putrid fog swelled over the deck, pouring through the floorboards with devastating speed. The effect was instantaneous. Strange boils erupted all over the forms of every dragon the fog touched, and many dropped were they stood. Beatrice and a handful of others were spared only because they had the thought to dive overboard once the boils erupted. While the sea seemed to stop the effects of the fog, the damage was done. By the time Beatrice finally hauled herself to shore, she was covered in boils and wispy threads of wet flesh, and her crew-mates were gone. Upon her return, Beatrice found no refuge in her home in lightning territory. While her condition is not contagious, most avoided her just in case. Her job was gone, and so was her coin. No shopkeep would hire her. Growing frustrated, Beatrice took another job on a less than reputable ship. Ironically, the pirates were more tolerant of her condition than any "well-respected" dragon, and so Beatrice's career in piracy began. Eventually, she made her way to Fogbound Cove, and it became a permanent stop for her ship. She tells her tale whenever asked, but asks in return one thing: if ever you hear of a ship that slings deadly plague as its weapons, tell her. |
