Elding missed his parents.
He knew they didn't miss them- he was all but fodder, after all, sold to Chance (who had a habit of taking in strays) as a days-old hatchling in the marketplace.
And he was happy in Revenant! He was, he really was. Chance taught him to make things, Belladonna oversaw his combat training with Gildie and Wraith (the Clan's best mage and the Clan's spymaster, respectively), there were a lot of dragons around his age for him to talk to, and nobody made fun of his looks or the fact that he clung to his scarf like a hatchling's safety blanket.
He just.. wished he knew who he belonged to- to see if they were at fault for leaving him, or if it was something that he did.
(Elding didn't have a high opinion of himself.)
So he asked the Clan's Lorekeeper, Emperor- an odd name for an Imperial, he thought- about the Clan's courier system. Then about foundlings (the term for parentless dragons), then hesitantly, hesitantly, he asked about tracking down the parents of those foundlings.
Emperor promised him that he would look into it on his next journey to the Tourmaline Archives, and a few months later he came back to Revenant with a newspaper.
On the tenth day of Eo, Thirdmonth, Despair and Malmqvist hatched five fodderlings: Laz (Female Guardian), Ezar (Female Guardian), Elding (Male Mirror), Menace (Female Guardian), and Borealis (Male Mirror).
And when Elding asked if Emperor had reached out to his siblings, the Imperial gave him a heavy, long look before pulling out a scroll- exalt records. All of his siblings had been exalted- three to the Stormcatcher and one to the Icewarden.
All of them.
He didn't even know what they looked like.

Quote:
(from emperor's bio)
Three days later, Elding took off flying southeast- towards Lightning territory. Kirbie, one of the scouts, saw him go. She said she thought he was going on patrol, but I can't tell if she's telling the truth, because she hated him and might have.. I don't know- made him leave? Snapped at him? I don't know, but now he's gone and it's all my fault.
