Biography
Sometimes, when the training is done for the day and they've said goodbye to that day's tributes, the little ones ask her if she misses her old clan.
They understand that Poliomyelitis isn't like them. She was not sent to auction, nor was she turned away. The Pink Dragon Empire asked for one among their ranks to go to the Clan of Bones as a sign of good will. She was among the Unnamed and though she had pink eyes, she was thistle and she often looked at the dark lines crowded on her skin and over her wings and she wished she had been born with pink or white smoke, or some colour that was light and beautiful. It had been an easy decision to volunteer and leave, and to join the Clan of Bones.
Here, she wears a mask, as they all do except for the Queen and Prince Consort. Here, she is a proud and vicious warrior, and through her, the clan is kept fed. She wears fresh flowers each morning and feathers as pink as her wings, and each night, she washes the blood from her talons and sits with the little ones and listens to their questions.
Does she miss her old clan? Poliomyelitis does not miss anything, except perhaps the little ones they send away to serve the Mother.
