And the emperor doesn't respond.
Caomhnoir sobs, gripping frantically at one of six front paws. It's kelpie tradition, that to become king you drown the biggest thing you can find and wear the skull as a coronet. He thought he was blessed when the emperor shambled to the edge of his tidepool. He didn't look at the patterning of it's mane, or the three silver rings (one through the right ear, two on the left ring finger-- they match his own)--
Emperors don't form this far from the ruins, in the open plains and the reflection of the sun off seaglass.
He thought they would be safe.
The emperor stirs. Opens its (five, six, nine) eyes and gazes at him, almost baleful. It's pathetic how quickly Caomhnoir is able to pick out Neamh's pale-desert-peach iris among the cluster.
It's mouth gapes open and it whispers something clumsy around wolf-teeth, and he's helpless to do anything but repeat it back; Coimhthiocha, oddity in the tongue of the first children- how fitting--

And the emperor stands, and allows him to steady himself against it's flank, and that, he supposes, is enough.

So they're not sure about music. Caomhnoir helps, though, and Caomhnoir has a nice singing voice. They like Caomhnoir (they like Caomhnoir (they loved him, don't they remember, he sang them to sleep))--
And sometimes he needs help, and so they follow him hunting (flank him (watch his seven because he forgets to, now))--
And they follow him and they hear petrichor scream.
(it can't be petrichor.)
(wait for the leader.)
(save him.)
and there's a hunter, in front of petrichor, holding his sword, and caomhnoir screams too-
and they stop thinking. just for a second. and the hunter isn't holding the sword. or standing. or there.
there's blood in their mouth.
petrichor looks.
scared of them.

and quietly, in the little space inside their heads that they all share now, the-piece-of-them-that-used-to-call-itself-psyche begins to cry.
