Glow sat quietly among the shrooms that softly lit up the meadow, a jar of cyan fireflies cupped in her talons. A whispy breeze rustled her apparel, making her seem all the more heaven-sent by her hidden observer.
"Is someone there?" Glow asked, looking up from her observation of the firefly jar. It may have just been her feminine instinct, or someone was really bad at stalking. Or perhaps both.
Gloom emerged from his spot hidden in the shrubbery, his customary scowl on his face as he approached Glow. Her face was illuminated by that jar of fireflies she held close to her chest, making Gloom's heartbeat pick up the pace a little as he finally came to stand before her. He dared not meet her eyes, lest she see through his facade and find out what an awful dragon he was.
She smiled gently. "Gloom? Why were you hiding in the bushes?" She knew the answer, obviously, but wanted to hear it from him. This made it the third time this week she'd caught him covertly watching her.
Still not meeting her curious gaze, Gloom muttered, "There was an interesting mushroom..."
"Ah..." Glow nodded sagely. They both knew he was lying. Pausing only briefly, Glow broke the awkward silence that had begun to stretch between them.
"Do you want to catch fireflies with me?"
Gloom's head swerved toward her, and--finally--he met her gaze. He didn't miss a beat when he answered "Yes", but his heart did.
