The watcher of the Graveyard Gardens where the clan's dead are buried, Asphodelus guards death itself. He is the deliverer, wishing all dragons who die in Spring Song their final good night and ensuring their peaceful passing into the beyond. A sight of sorrow and loss, he dedicates almost all his time to the solemn graves and ashes, praying over them, performing rites of burial or cremation and surrounding them with flowers and amulets.

His presence in the clan is not without mystery, however. Nobody in Spring Song can remember when or how Asphodelus arrived. He and his musical companion Gypsophila seem to have been a part of the life of every dragon since the beginning of time.

Guarding Death is a lonely and contemplative occupation. Though Asphodelus is avoided and reviled by others, the one dragon who loves and accepts him as he is, his inseparable companion in sickness and health, is Gypsophila, who guards Life. Just as life and death are two sides of the same coin, so too are their charges so intertwined as to involve the other and the other's domains. Thus dark and solemn Asphodelus adorns himself with his beloved's radiant silks and luminous pearls, the shining light of life.

Asphodelus is one of the most famous of the plants connected with the dead and the underworld, an association originated in Greek mythology which carried into Victorian flower language.
