“Not all things turn into dust. Your life will fade into the mist.”
In myth, Hel is the goddess of the dead and the sole queen of Helheim. Most depict her as cold, gloomy, quiet, and indifferent to suffering, both that of the world above her and the world of her own. In many ways, the name “Hel” recalls the quintessential essence of death and dishonor – silence, darkness, and a vast universe without meaning or hope.
The dragon Hel came into the world of Sornieth alone, without even the mythical Hel’s divine father to guide her. Immersed in water, tempted by shadows, she swam through the Sea of a Thousand Currents to The Tangled Wood, where she listened to the songs of the blue crickets and chased the gloomwillow guides into what felt like the edge of oblivion. Commanding an army of local creatures and led by them through the thick murky woods, she eventually reached the sacred Forum of the Obscured Crescent, where she pledged herself to shadow and took on the ancient mythological name.
Hel was powerful – almost carelessly so – yet she was not outwardly ambitious or regal like Athena. Her presence was one that seeped slowly and seamlessly through blood and soil, commanded without words, and surrounded the very air the dragons relied on to breathe. When she first crossed paths with Athena, she had said nothing – only slightly bowed her head to indicate an interest in companionship and subservience. Athena, wishing to question her, attempted to test her, desiring to learn of Hel’s exact motivations and capabilities; Hel’s limitless patience and seemingly immortal character, however, soon made Athena realize that Hel was a force that she could only influence, not control.
Settling into Athena’s clan, Hel keeps mostly to herself, performing rituals at dusk and reading up on myth and poetry. Athena is careful not to relegate many tasks – especially the ones she deems of high moral importance – to Hel, and Hel in return serves Athena well, performing all her tasks with ease and finesse. Hel remains unapproachable to most; she will only converse with Athena and Supay.
While Hel is hard to approach and harder to understand, most other clan members have accepted her presence, viewing her as a divine force they’d rather not offend. The only other clan member who dares to penetrate through Hel’s sphere of influence is Supay, a dragon similarly named after a god of death; although few knows how or why he has developed an interest in Hel, the two seem to have formed some kind of relationship, and their silhouettes can often be spotted together in the fading darkness. When asked about his relationship with Hel, Supay typically merely responds (with what some interpret as his signature dark humor) that they’re only discussing their subtle differences in the philosophy about death and decay.
One thing is certain: Hel is here to stay. She will likely live through even the greatest catastrophes. Many pray to her in hopes that she’ll spare what remains of them in the eternal winter.

Supay
Mate
No one really knows much of anything about their partnership. When asked Supay always replies that they talk of death, and Hel never answers at all.

Quiet, still, watching, waiting
To catch her answers need no baiting,
Death a domain she's echoing,
As she keeps on silently plundering.

Cold, unmoving, is she there?
But her ears and eyes are everywhere,
If she speaks it can't be good,
But yet she remains in the neighborhood.

Entwined with death yet far from it,
It seems her life force will never plumit,
No one knows what she's doing and it suits her just fine,
A lover and loved but he won't say 'she's mine',
As if she'll reveal it all when she knows that it's time.
