A dark Obelisk sat perched high atop a cliff, watching a small group of young dragons from afar. Her dark blue and gray coat camouflaged her as nothing more than an aging statue, her red peacock spots looking almost as though she was painted. Broad birds soared through the air, casting down extensive shadows along the green pastures. The bright sun cascaded down, gently warming the creatures bathing in the golden glow.

Down below in the clearing, the young dragons chased one another, their gleeful giggles echoing throughout the open area. A small smile crept across the Obelisk’s features, plans beginning to form in her mind. She fancied interfering with young dragons as they were so helplessly foolish. Gullible, even. She watched as the younglings played a game of pretend; the oldest impersonating some sort of folktale monster while the others laughed and raced away from him.

The Obelisk glanced around the surroundings in the clearing below, searching for any older dragons that could pass as the younglings’ parents. After confirming that they were alone and must have wandered too far from their lair, she took a step closer to the cliff’s edge. The young dragons were oblivious to her presence, making her upcoming appearance all the more interesting.

The Obelisk shut her eyes, focusing on something deep within her mind. Her body began to dissipate, small flecks of gray and blue flickering into the atmosphere. After a few brief seconds, a small scattering of red and gray remained in the air, before slowly drifting and dissolving into nothingness. The dragon’s body had essentially disappeared with no evidence of her even existing in that moment anymore. The innocent group of young dragons in the bright green clearing below continued their game of pretend, blind as to what was about to happen.

From the perspective of the younglings, the world around them began to go dark. Shadows ebbed at their peripherals and obscured their vision, darkness emerging from their very being to suffocate the warm sunlight. It seemed as though the whole cosmos went dark in a matter of seconds. The young dragons huddled together, small whimpers escaping their throats as they watched shadows invade.

Kharo took the form of the monster the young dragon was previously impersonating. A towering beast appeared before the fearful group, its appearance unlike anything they had ever seen. The creature had two separate pairs of wings sprouting out from its shoulder blades, the incredible wingspan casting vast shadows on the dark earth. Twisted spirals of horns emerged from the beast’s skull, curving together to create wicked shapes. Dirty clumps of fur clung to the creature’s body, causing its appearance to look mangy. Long, sharp talons could be seen on all of the beast’s paws, dried blood caked in and around them. Large teeth sprouted from the maw of the being, poking out from underneath its jaw. The beast exhaled, a puff of hot steam evaporating into the air. It peered down at the group of dragons, all now visibly tremoring. It spoke to the quivering young dragons, its booming tone raspy and gravelly, like that of some sort of ancient being.

“You dare wake Kharo? There is a reason folktale stories get passed down for generations.”

No one in the group of young dragons dared to speak to the imposing beast. The quiet whimpers quickly turned into full blown bawling, tears streaming down the face of the youngest dragon. The beast continued, her bright red eyes gazing down intensely at the tearful group.

“Where are your parents? Didn’t anyone tell you not to wander too far from your lair? It’d be a shame if something happened to you and no one knew where you were.”

A devious smile spread across the beast’s features, flashing her bright white fangs towards the younglings. They remained motionless with the exception of the streaming tears. The large beast took a step closer to the fearful dragons, dropping her monstrous head down until she was mere inches away from the closest dragon. She exhaled deeply, her hot breath reeking of rotting flesh while rancid sinew clung to her teeth. The creature extended her sets of wings, wrapping them around the huddled group in front of her, blocking out the remaining light.

She inhaled a deep breath before letting out an ear-piercing wail. The sound was unlike anything the young dragons had ever heard before. It did not sound like any creature of the forest nor any breed of dragon. Their own screams of absolute terror mixed with the beast’s howl, a haunting harmony echoing throughout the land for miles. The wail went on for what felt like eternity, the eyes of the young dragons squeezed shut tightly.

Silence suddenly consumed the world. Minutes passed before one brave dragon finally dared to open her eyes. The universe was as if the beast had never been there. Birds chirped and twirled through the air, blazing sunlight beating down from the heavens. The world was bright and golden once again. A worried voice echoed through the clearing, the tone familiar to the young dragons.

“Lovelies! Where are you guys?”

The young dragons leapt off the ground, making a bee-line for the voice. They raced one another towards the sound, horror still frozen on their expressions. The dragons slammed into one another as they stumbled upon their mother, all beginning to breathlessly talk over one another.

Unbeknownst to the dragons below, sitting silently upon a cliff was Kharo, a small smile on her features. She watched the interaction from afar, small specks of gray and blue reflecting against the sunlight as they pieced themselves back together against her form.

Keep the tales alive, little ones.
