Biography
“I married my high school sweetheart, too.”
He turned and looked to the side.
“She was wonderful. Perfect. Glowing, brilliant, and ... she was mine.”
Peine’s body somehow looked smaller than ever before. His sides thin with ribs showing. His eyes were ringed with red, and his claws sharp and ragged.
“She was such an energetic soul. Everyone who met her loved her. Charismatic, one would say.”
His entire frame shivered from head to tail.
“She had this habit of hopping in place when she was excited- which was a lot of the time- and she’d never eat the purple leaves in Romaine lettuce. Said something like ‘The purple is not heathy, it’s not green!’ And I’d end up eating all of the leftover purple lettuce.”
The tired tundra took a deep breath before he continued.
“Her pelt shimmered and shined like the waves on a beach before the sunrise. She’d laugh and I swear I heard an angelic choir in my head. She deserved everything I could possible give her- so that’s what I did. I got a job, and slowly saved up enough treasure to buy her the small cottage that she wanted. She spent hours trying to decide which shade of paint she wanted for the walls- which flowers to plant in the flower box- what bed we should put in the master’s suite.”
Peine stared at the floor, at his nicely cuffed sleeves on his black suit.
“I didn’t know what was going to happen. If I had, I would have stalled. I would have made us wait to move. I would have done everything in my power... She began to paint the walls of the nursery. She constantly talked about having children, what they would look like, how many eggs we would have.. I was with her every step of the way.”
He looked up from the sheet of paper on the podium in front of him to the crowd seated in black. His eyes caught onto her mother’s eyes. The veil fluttered slightly as a stray tear slid down her face.
“She was a wonderful wife. She lit up my world like nobody was able to. The heavens have welcomed her back through their gates once more.”
His voice shook as he continued. “Lorre... if you can hear me now, I love you. I’ll love you forever. You’ve left an empty space in my heart that will never heal.. not until we’re together again.”
Peine stepped off of the stage, tears gathering in his eyes once more. Why did she leave him? Why now? When he needed her most, she’s gone. How is he going to survive the rest of his life knowing that ....
