If only he hadn’t bought the red one. The dragon hissed as the scalding liquid sloshed over the sides of the sanguine mug and cascaded down the back of his hands. Again. Grumbling incoherently with frustration, he carefully set the hot beverage down on the counter top and haphazardly wiped his hands on the front of his tunic. ”Third time is NOT the charm…”, he mumbled to himself as he gingerly touched his lips, another unfortunate victim, alongside his hands and chin, to the blistering drink. Corrosion scowled at the red mug, contemplating his life choices. He had purchased the crimson cup nearly a month ago, drawn to the vermillion patterns etched into the porcelain. The vendor had mentioned something about the mug’s enchantments, but the impatient Snapper had paid them no mind. He was too excited to finally find such an appealing mug for his morning coffee to replace the dingy, cracked cup that he had been using since his hatchling days. Enchantments? Well, that was just bonus points. He was definitely regretting his choice to not listen to the vendor now. Three weeks later and he still hadn’t managed to conquer the bewitched scarlet vessel. Every morning was the same song and dance – brew coffee, pour coffee, lots of burns, frustration, anger, forget the coffee, go to work, lament the lack of morning caffeine. He had even tried returning to the marketplace, but the mug’s vendor had disappeared and no amount of questioning other patrons had given him a clue to the hawker’s whereabouts. Corrosion drew a claw against the mug’s etchings, tracing the gentle curving lines and sharp peaks in the porcelain. There had to be a way to turn down the cup’s magic-induced heating. ”Who even buys this magical stuff anyhow?”, he lamented as he stared forlornly at his still too-hot beverage, oblivious to the fact that he was one of those dragons. The smell of coffee filled his home, enticing him to take yet another ill-fated sip. At this point, Corrosion had begun to seriously consider skipping this part of his morning ritual altogether. Stubbornness was a family trait, however, and the Snapper steeled himself for another attempt. Steam rose steadily from the mouth of the mug as he hesitantly gripped the handle and lifted the beverage to his mouth. Hot. So hot. Spluttering helplessly, Corrosion slammed the mug back down on the counter. A chestnut stain blossomed on the front of his tunic as coffee dribbled down his chin. The Snapper threw his hands up in despair and chalked this up to another lost battle. ”One of these days, I’ma drink you.” Corrosion snarled determinedly, glaring at the vermillion cup. ”You just wait. By the Flamecaller, I WILL drink my coffee and no magical mug is going to stop me!” | _______ |
