Biography

Neither Homer in the Odyssey nor Apollonius Rhodius in the Argonautics reveal the name of the Sirens. The first does not even describe their appearance and only suggests their probable number through the use of the dual. Apollonio Rodio briefly reconstructs the story of the Sirens: beautiful girls, daughters of Acheloo, the river god with a thousand features, and of Terpsichore, muse of music and dance; Priestesses of Persephone later transformed into bird-winged monsters, perhaps punished by Demeter for not preventing the kidnapping of her daughter or perhaps at their own request so that with the new wings they would have been facilitated in the search for Persephone. The scholiasts reveal further details: the Sirens are always daughters of Acheloo and Terpsichore or the mysterious Sterope, punished by Aphrodite for choosing a chaste life and transformed into gigantic birds with only human heads flew to the mysterious island of Anthemoessa.
The names of the Sirens are Aglophéme (Ἀγλαοφήμη), Thelxiépeia (Θελξιέπεια), Peisinóe (Πεισινόη) and Lígeia (Λίγεια). Speaking names, or rather the siren with the radiant voice, the siren with the enchanting voice, the siren that persuades the mind, the siren with the shrill voice
