FIRST ENCOUNTER
Now he is one of the bravest warriors of the Happenstances. Iestyn is very eager to serve and protect his clan well and make Tonke proud. In his eagerness, he put on any piece of armor he could find. It's all mismatched but as long as it enables him to stay alive a little longer and take a few more hits meant for his clanmates, he really couldn't care less. (Hina is secretly plotting to get him a full, matching and maybe sparkly set someday.) His fighting style is to launch himself head first into opponents to stun them and for the remainder of the fight he uses his strong tail to balance himself while kicking and slashing with his legs and sharp claws (kangaroo style). |
A PROPER SET OF ARMOUR
She picked up the neat wooden box and headed for the Training Grounds where she was sure to find Iestyn busy with training young dragons. Iestyn trained both dragons who wanted to be exalted and those who wished to stay with the clan. He argued that every dragon that could defend themselves, would count as protection for the Happenstances, regardless of whether they would remain with them or not. If he wasn’t teaching anybody combat, he patrolled around The Grove or went for training in the Arena himself. All this he always did in his Rag Rug of Armour – clattering and squeaking away. An ensemble of completely mismatched armour pieces. It was just not an aesthetic Hina could tolerate for long. Even if she was moved beyond words by Iestyn’s dedication and loyalty to the Happenstances. Consequently, she had busied herself with saving some treasure and charming her way into finding Iestyn a full suit of armour. The clan’s participation in the L.O.S.T. programme had sped up this process significantly. Instead of going to the Marketplace or Auction House, Hina had contributed her treasure, charms and wit to completing L.O.S.T. objectives, which in the end earned the clan some nice raffle prizes. Hina had petitioned Tonke to go for the suit of armour when selecting a prize.
"Say, dearest clan leader–" Hina began to inquire in her smoothest voice but had to swallow down a lump of anxiety, when Tonke turned her massive head away from the plants she was tending to. Hina suddenly had the full attention of the Guardian who towered above her even while laying down. "– say, did you ever think about how ragged and incompetent our beloved Iestyn looks in that jumble of armour? I say, if this is the first dragon our enemies or even allies see, they will think us awfully inept – regardless of his actual skill!" She hastily added. "Further, those pieces of armour do not fit together. They scrape where they shouldn’t scrape and they expose where they shouldn’t expose. The noise alone precludes any surprise attacks as well."
Tonke gave a huff, signalling Hina to get on with it and cut the fancy words. "Well what I am meaning to propose is, I saw the raffle prizes up for the L.O.S.T. graduation and I think we should go for a proper set of armour for Iestyn. As I’ve said it wouldn’t only benefit him personally. It would make a better impression on other clans, invoke more fear and respect from enemies and protect this vital member of our clan! Also the amount of headaches I’m getting from looking at that mismatched suit of horror would go down drastically…" The emerald guardian was silent for a moment, giving Hina and then Iestyn, who could be seen through the trees demonstrating attack manoeuvres on the Training Grounds, a considering look. "I should really put you on as our ambassador, Hina. You have a way with words like no other. I agree with you. It is time we showed Iestyn some appreciation." Tonke chuckled, amused by the sparkly Skydancer’s petition. Iestyn confusedly set the box down on the ground, pried open its lid, and immediately slammed it shut again. "Hina!" he hissed, "This must have cost a fortune! What is the meaning of this? I’d rather you spent treasure on resources our clan actually needs!" Ever peace impersonated, Hina explained calmly how the clan had acquired the armour and repeated all the arguments she previously used to convince headstrong Tonke – although with maybe a little bit less snark to save Iestyn’s feelings. Odd how many of her clanmates had difficulty admitting they had emotions. Iestyn opened the lid again and stared down at the polished metal and crisp leather. His own reflection stared back from the gorget. "It is beautiful. Thank you. Thank you so much. I will honour this gift by defending this clan with my life!" His voice was audibly wobbly and even his proclamation did not come out as loud and fierce as his usual battle cries. "I’d rather you honour it by staying alive and using it to protect yourself but I don’t want to ruin the moment so I’ll take it." Hina teased with a fond smile."I’ll still keep some of my old gear though, I think" Iestyn pondered while already removing piece after piece of his old ensemble, ignoring Hina’s exasperated groan. |
