Archimedes Undying.
↠ The Black Heir

"And now was acknowledged the presence of the Red Death. He had come like a thief in the night. And one by one dropped the revellers in the blood-bedewed halls of their revel, and died each in the despairing posture of his fall..."

He looks just like his father.

Small, sickly child, scared of every sound that was even remotely too loud, always hiding behind his uncle’s legs. He was his father’s perfect copy in everything but the mind. Wide eyed, he was too afraid to let go, clinging to his uncle because the man was strangely kind.

Or maybe it was because he promised to make him like his father. Strong and beautiful and courageous. Weed out the flaws and make them into strengths, he could trust him, his uncle knew what was best. He knew what he was doing. It began so small too, little hints and guiding touches.

Straight back, your father stands upright, he does not slump over.

It seemed that no one knew his father better than Veles, he knew everything, even the smallest of details. What started out of curiosity became a slowly growing obsession, the driving force of it all was Veles, at first, but then the young boy began to demand more. Show me more, show me everything, he cried, while hiding his face behind his hands. Make me like my father.

He was sick and tired of being scared of his own shadow, he didn’t want to falter and freeze every time a stranger’s gaze fell on him. He knew he embarrassed his mother, he knew he was being mocked behind his father’s turned back. And they both would not allow any of those rumors to reach his ears.

Are you not tired of being the coward?

Yes, yes he was. He wanted more, wanted the success that seemed to fly to the Undying line, to land in their laps. They all were happy in their own ways, they all were...not like him. And in his ear, Veles whispered. Sweet nothings of how beautiful he would be, how people would love him for who he was, who he represented. That he would be just like his father. It was a potent poison, the thought once planted, took hold and its roots went through the entirety of his mind. He wanted this. He wanted what the golden serpent promised.

Nothing tasted sweeter than the almost kiss from the lips of the same man that spoon fed him knowledge over and about his father. That shaped him with his bare hands. Fencing, music, magic, hidden talents bloomed raw and vibrant the longer Veles kept this up, the stronger the pressure, the fiercer the boy became. Unwilling to give up, to give in, he excelled. One by one, he outmatched first his opponents, later his tutors until finally only Veles remained.

You are almost perfect, now we only need to change your hair--
No.

Years bleeding into each other, the change of character imminent and near on complete. The shaking boy was replaced by a coy, smiling young man, not an adult yet, but almost there. He didn’t shake at his shadow anymore, instead he waited for it to strike first, confidence coloring his smile, skill clouding his body like a palpable aura. Truly an Undying son, better, truly the shadow of the Undying one himself.

Yet, years of working closely side by side, of being shaped and formed like a lump of clay, did not go back unnoticed, with no side effects on the artist nor the artwork. Over all this time, Veles’ honey sweet whispers woke desire that no one could satisfy. Desire that drove him to watch as the other bathed, made him coy enough to join, unbidden, too close. How could he not?

Why do you look at me like this, Archimedes?
I want you.

A simple pleading wish, spoken more akin to a command than anything else, he held no power of Veles and yet, here they were. Side by side, behind a forced mien of neutrality, he could see too many emotions at once, heartbreak, fear, longing and desire. And he never saw him, far away gaze fixated on the star speckled shape of his father. It should have sat wrong with him, he should have screamed and shouted, demanded what was held just out of his reach. But no. Veles did too great a job for him to break into mere tantrums.

Archimedes waited. This affair was going on too long, he wanted to make it something firmer, something that could not be broken by politics. Yet, he met hesitation, met resistance. And finally, the day came when his parents picked a well match for him. A noble spouse, someone respectable. Someone he would never see, because they were not Veles.

Smile, Veles. You had your chance, you didn’t took it. After all, you have to fight for what you love.

During the wedding, Veles was nowhere to be found, sick, his mother said. Unwell, his father claimed with eyes dark from knowing. He knew what had happened, he knew the marks on his son’s arms, his neck were not from his spouse. And he knew what his son was planning. He could have stopped it. Instead his father turned a blind eye.

Through months, he waited, patiently. Each night laid awake with his eyes closed, listening for the feather light fall of soundless feet. Until he finally heard them, softer than even he imagined, soundless. His spouse asleep, helpless, defenseless. He could have reacted, could have stopped the dagger as it fell. Instead he listened for the sound of torn fabric and gush of crimson wetness.

You took your sweet time, beloved.

Veles was startled, fear flashing in bright eyes before ice consumed it whole. With bloody hands he stood, over a dying body watching only him, him as he sat up, him as he crawled closer, mesmerized by the faint glow of purple. Ice in his eyes, neutrality on his face, Veles saw him, him for the first time, not his father, not his replacement. Him.

Now you see, good. Look closer.

Warm blood against his cheek, Veles’ fingers unmoving yet held there by his own hand. He pulled closer, kissing unmoving lips. On the bed drenched by blood, it felt strangely right to fall into the other’s arms. Or make him fall. Innocence shredded, wide eyed wonder replaced by something genuine, something darker, far more intense. A low burning fire sparking a natural catastrophe.

Now you are mine.

He made him, he created him
yet he never wed him. Not until
it was too late. He killed for him,
he only ever saw him now. Look
closer, see the monster you made,
become mine with skin and soul.
