Hyas and his Hat

"Thus, then, Hyantius to his Partners spake,
That trod the Mazes of the pathlesse Wood:
My Friends our nets and javelins reake with blood:
Enough hath been the fortune of this day:"

(Named for Hyas, the son of the Titan Atlas, this regal male was a gift from Ithika during the first week of my flight rising experience.)

In his early days within the clan, Hyas had a short but passionate romance with the pearlcatcher Nether, who he rescued from a storm. When nether found her calling to serve a higher purpose, Hyas tried to sooth his broken heart in fling with the renowned beauty Kyoei. However her vapid personality soon put him off. Thankfully, a shining Royal Coatl by the name of Hester came along and Hyas truly thought he'd found the one. Until she turned out to be more interested in valuable items and fled the Bastion in the middle of the night (taking with her a large number of of treasures). After this Hyas has finally resolved himself to spend the rest of his days alone.

Done with the affairs of domestic life he has shunned the clan's nests to live as a perpetual bachelor. He is a volunteer member of the Vigilight militia alongside Anasterian, WhiteFang and Mercy. One evening, after too much to drink, he let slip that he'd apprenticed in architecture, carpentry and masonry as a youngster. After that moment he was put in charge of the Bastion's repairs and maintenance. Of an exceedingly lazy personality, Hyas delegates the tasks required by this role whenever he can, supervising from the tavern.

Oh you’d like to hear a story would you? Well, I do love to tell a tale, and this is one that even my clan-mates have not heard. Let me tell you about the day I got my hat. Yes! My hat, not perhaps the life changing moment you were expecting right? Well you’d be wrong! Hats are important, and this one very much so.

It was a stormy night, as befitting such a fateful event. I’d stepped out earlier that day to purchase supplies from a trader over at the Tempest Spire. Did you know you can pick up the most fabulous tobacco — wait not, I’m getting side tracked. Anyway, I was on my way home when suddenly lightning struck right beside the road, sending a mighty tree crashing down. Gave me a right start it did. But the exciting part? The tree shrieked! I kid you not. I’d never heard such a noise from a tree before.

Despite the howling tempest I thought it might be worth a look. So I scrambled through the mud, nearly broke my neck in the process, and would you believe that tangled up in the branches was a female pearlcatcher? The poor thing had tried to shelter from the storm. Well she was beautiful, but in a terrible state, all scratched, bruised and crying. So I did what any gentleman would do. Wrapped her up in my favourite emerald leather coat and and did my best to shelter her through the night.

Damn miserable night it was too. But at dawn the storm cleared and the spiral insisted she’d be able to get home. I let her keep the coat, as damaged and muddy as it was, on account of her shivering so much. So we parted ways and I returned back to the clan.

One week later, a package arrived, all tied up in a silver bow. And inside? Well it was a most excellent white top hat, the one you see me wearing today. Certainly worth giving up my favourite coat for, don’t you think? Oh, I suppose I should mention, that pretty pearlcatcher, her name was Nether. She might have arrived with the hat… my we had some wonderful adventures together. But that a story for another time.

Another Former Mate, Hester.

Vigilight’s former appraiser Hester was in charge of the Bastion Treasury & Museum. A little eccentric Hester loved to talk about the collection and could drone on for hours about the most mundane item.

“Our feature item for today is the rare Nickel Cat Figurine. The codex found with this unusual piece contains the following text: A miniature feline set with tiny ruby chips. The inscription on the base translates to ‘For Trigger’. The item is believed to be of archaic origins, given as a token of appreciation to one known as KS-Sponsor MiKayla. I am still waiting on more of Moss’s notes to finish the appraisal of this item’s value.”
