Biography

-_The teamaker's student_-
Adopted daughter and teabrewing pupil of Relicster

plaguev4.png It was a swelteringly hot day along the edge of the Rotrock Rim, and I was too worn from the heat to play with my youngest of siblings. My two nestmates, a brother and sister, were much too mature to bother with the idea of play, and today I could not find it in me to care either.

So it was then, that my youngest siblings had only each other to rough-house with. Surely more hatchlings would come though, so they would not be lonely at any point.

Our mother, Vitali, had an admirable goal: to have so many descendants that they, once battle-hardened and strong, could protect all of Sornieth like it were a single, enormous Charge. I was happy to accept this noble duty, although I found I did not possess a fearless love of battle such as my elder sister Myla did. I feared I would not live up to mother’s expectation, although I knew deep down that she would still love me all the same.

On this day, several clan emissaries arrived requesting to see my mother. This too was a part of her plan; in order to grant all of Sornieth’s vast lands our protection, many of us were destined to move far away from our homeland, meeting new people and places to love and guard with our very lives.

I heard one of the dragons mention me, and I lifted my head inquisitively. Would my departure day be this one, indeed?

Raising my muzzle into the air and closing my red eyes to inspect the stagnant air for traces of unfamiliar scents, I was surprised when a sudden current swept around my nostrils. With it it carried the scent of fresh blossoms and floral teas. I opened my eyes again, and many more faces turned to the sky as another enormous dragon with vast, leatherlike wings descended to stand among myself and my siblings.

He, like so many others, asked to see our mother, and turned to her when I pointed the way with my tail.

“What is your name?” He asked me, seeing that my mother was already busy speaking to the strangers who arrived before him.

“Mari.” I answered. “And you?”

He smiled kindly, wrinkles underneath his icy-pale eyes betraying some age. “Good to meet you, Mari. I am Relicster. I am here representing the Darkwood Denizens, of the Viridian Labyrinth. I’d hate to bore you, so I’ll save the diplomatic spiel for your mother when she has time.”

That didn’t bore me at all, though! The Viridian Labyrinth… Of course, many of my siblings had ventured even further from home, flying south to settle in the Ashfall Waste, or even the Southern Icefield. But such a fascination with our sister-Flight was innate in all Plague dragons, and I presumed the reverse was true with the children of Nature.

Finally, my mother finished speaking, and Relicster politely passed the dragons who now came to greet my siblings and I.

The conversation between mother and the great Imperial was brief, his head craning as she apparently informed him of an unfortunate truth: this other clan had already chosen me to come home with them. “I’m so sorry to have bothered you,” He apologized to her, seemingly making to leave. “But take this as a token of my thanks regardless.”

He reached something out to her with a stubby forelimb, a package of some sort. “Even though I could not procure the Guardian the clan had wished for, this is for you. A Verdant Blend of tea, made by yours truly. I do hope you enjoy it.”

The dragons that had struck up a small conversation with me paused, and listened to the other exchange happening behind them.

“Is it true that your clan wished to give Mari a home?” One of the smaller dragons asked the large Imperial. He turned to them and hung his ears a little.

“Well, we didn’t choose her preceding my arrival, should another clan need her more – but of all of Vitali’s children, the gentle temper she was said to possess did make her our preferred pick. Of course, since you came here and spoke to Vitali first, I cannot make any demands from –“

“If it’s okay with you both, I’d like for her to make the choice.” The tiny dragon interrupted gently, looking my way after speaking. “What do you think, Mari?”

I looked to mother, and though surprise showed in her eyes, a warm and encouraging spark quickly came to replace it.

“Oh, but how can I choose a home if I haven’t seen either?” I wondered to them.

To that, Relicster offered up a solution. “How about this - since this clan resides within the Sunbeam Ruins, we could come with them in their journey home, and stay there a while? I hate to impose on others without warning of course, but I could tell you everything about my clan whilst you get to experience theirs. It should be enough to inform the right choice for you. And of course I’d provide my tea-brewing services for the whole clan, free of charge for however long I stay!”

I and the small dragons shared a joyous laugh at his impromptu solution. Even if I were to stay in the Ruins, I was still glad to have met this tea-loving giant.

My elder sister Myla, roused by our to-and-fro conversation, wound up demanding to join me, and our mother encouraged it.

So, together we set off for the Sunbeam Ruins. We stayed there a week, with my sister and I getting to know the local clanspeoples whilst Relicster did exactly as he had promised, brewing tea for whoever was wanting like he would die if he stopped for too long.

The never-quite-night of the Sunbeam Ruins was something I struggled with; the lingering light kept me awake sometimes. Taking a walk helped, so when sleep would not come I would take a grassy path that lead to the very outskirts of the clan grounds, where I was least likely to disturb anyone. A few times Relicster met me like that. He also found himself unable to sleep, and so we would walk together and talk quietly until we were too tired to be kept awake by the light anymore.

On another sleepless late evening, I figured I would take a different path this time, and wound up overhearing the clan’s councildragons having a meeting. Apparently, they were impressed with Myla's skill in combat. I didn’t feel envy for that; battle had always been her thing, not mine, and I preferred it that way. There were more ways to protect than through violence.

That next morning, it was announced that Myla would stay with the clan, and with that, I was encouraged to join Relicster. He thanked the clan leaders profusely, and procured yet more of his teas as proof of his gratitude. He raised his head again and turned it my way, smiling in a way I could only describe as poorly-hidden exuberance. Our conversation back in my birthland had been relatively brief, but he must have felt a connection then and there, to be so joyous now.

“Will you let me guide you to your new home, Mari?” He asked, and I nodded with a small indulgent smile of my own. I had met many kind people here, but I knew in that moment where my destiny lay: in Relicster's clan, deep in the heart of the Viridian Labyrinth.
