______When Neos found Leukis, he was barely alive. A bloodied mess of a hatchling, only a few days old at best. The illness had struck his nest while they were still eggs. His siblings hadn't been as lucky as he, rotting away before they could even hatch. His parents were devastated, threw him out with his siblings. They thought he had died too, but the child was still breathing. When Neos saw him, he was not only dying from the strange flesh-eating sickness, but now by the unforgiving cold. Without missing a beat, she scooped him up and wrapped him in her clothes. Flying back to the clan as fast as she could, she arrived with the little one demanding help. Dragons gathered, helping her carry the little ridgeback to a cot. They worked together to warm him up, wrapping his body in bandages to try and stop the bleeding. They had never seen such a predicament, never an illness quite like this. After the first night, Neos was left alone with him. No one knew if the illness was contagious. Neos didn't care, though. She just wanted to see the hatchling survive. Such a small, frail creature. He didn't deserve this. He deserved to be alive and healthy, like every other hatchling.

______He could barely keep his eyes open, the bandages around his head holding them shut. He made a soft groan, causing the skydancer to stop what she was doing to look up at her little patient. A sigh escaped her lips.

______"No, dear. You have to rest."

______Leukis let out another whine, rolling over a bit in his cot. His whole body hurt, covered in bloodied bandages that had to be replaced every five to ten minutes. It burned when the air touched his exposed skin, or rather, a lack thereof.

______Neos had spent several weeks away from her usual post as a clan guard. For hours she would sit in this office, writing things down by candlelight as the ridgeback beside her slept. His disease was new, something not yet discovered in this region. Still, the only qualified doctor in the clan, she had to do her best to treat the young boy. And so for weeks she tirelessly watched over the other, invested in seeing Leukis healthy and happy again.

______So much time sacrificed, time that she could never make up again. Leukis could never repay the debt he had with his caretaker, but he at least knew how to start. He would study alongside her, grow up amongst the clan's books and her journals of notes that she had written while watching over him. Neos would no longer be the only doctor in the clan, he would make sure of it.

______Fully grown, Leukis works hard to study and heal diseases that threaten other dragons' lives. Though he remains terminally ill, he is still capable of caring for other dragons. Many say that his experiences make him that much more effective as a doctor. His disease isn't contagious, but Leukis has focused his studies on those types of diseases especially. When he's not in his office either studying or helping a patient, he's visiting Neos, who has been his caretaker since he was small.

______Around his neck, the vial hung. A gift from his caretaker, a gorgeously crafted glass vial, but what truly mattered was what was inside. The serum that saved his life, that continued to do so with each dose he took. A magical serum, the sum of all of Neos' hard work. Why he was still standing here today. It reminded him each day of all of the sacrifices she made for him. How hard she worked, how long she worked. Despite all odds, she had achieved the impossible. His cure.
