______ Root pretty much ran into the guards at the doors of the Spires. There were two of them, blocking his path and glaring at him with small eyes.

‘Lemme pasttttt,’ he said, hopping from foot to foot.

 ‘Why?’

‘Because I wanna be immortalll!’

The guard on the right frowned. ‘You know it sends people insane.’

‘Yessss.’

The guards glanced at each other. ‘I think he's already insane,’ the left guard hissed.

Right guard nodded. ‘Agreed.’

They simultaneously stepped aside. ‘Go crazy as you like,’ Righty said.

Root charged past them and into a tunnel. It was a dark, straight tunnel. It led to a chamber right at the back of the building, where he found what looked like a ball of swirling dull orange that was the size of a grape.

There was nothing else in the room, so he plucked the orange not-grape from the air.

And ate it.

It didn't taste of anything, which he was disappointed about. Couldn't weird swirly things ever taste of something? He turned charged glumly back down the tunnel and out into the sunlight, where the guards were hiding as far away from the doors as possible. Root ignored them and continued his slow charge down the muddy hill away from the Spires.

The guards noticed he was trailing orange smoky must in his wake and rushed into the building worriedly. He came back again half a minute later. ‘He's taken the Odylesque.’

‘How?! It's meant to be impossible to move, which is why there's a building HERE, in this godforsaken mudpit.’

The other guard just shrugged.
