The Ancient Sea | Theme

Strange, Wise, Distant
GPuEZOP.png

Creature o’ memory
Father old as stone
Cradle o’ continents
Carry wind o’er shore

See Ages rise
An’ Eons fall
Keep story an’ tale
Bring ye sailors home

Old an’ wise
Our mother o’er all
Great sea o’ worlds
Guard our hearts strong

A new sun peeks calmly over the eastern horizon, throwing rich warmth across the landscape. Dawn. The white sand of the beach glinted here and there with flecks of gold and other glitter as you made slow passage along the shore. The growing sky was still dark enough that when the tide lapped at your feet, brilliant motes of cream, gold, and blue light swirled where your presence disturbed their rhythm. Serenity, beauty, peace. Sounds of the vast and untiring sea filled your ears and so did the harsh waking calls of the earliest gulls. Even in the paltry light you could see just how azure the waters were. An instinct invited you to wade further out, and so, you did.

You feel ethereal as you watch the tiny glowing organisms in the shallow water cluster around your ankles while you walk. Sprightly morning breezes toss tiny salt sprays up against your frame and whisper playfully to the clothes upon your back. A whisper, a hush, a sound. Sound, sound, sound... you doze ever slightly. Sound, sound... an echo in your head. You hadn’t realized your eyes closed until they fluttered open in a shocked yet placid way.

Sound, sound, sound... you sound, you feel different. Who, a voice neither male nor female brushes softly in your mind. The voice is both young and ancient, most certainly curious. It begs again. In front of you the swell rises and the sensation of the sea pulling on you fills your senses. Water recedes from around your person and before you wavers a form you’ve never imagined.

It is vaguely draconic; a gracile head, long neck, serpentine body, two wings, and strong yet nimble limbs. But still, it holds some otherworldly quality. Their body is covered in wave-like forms and their wings sparkle with the bioluminescent organisms, twinkling like stars in the night sky. The rising sun reflects through their clear body and sends a shower of dazzling shards of color all around. But it is their eyes that strike you most. Bright as a lantern of trapped fireflies, they glow and swirl and emanate a primordial energy into your very being. The phenomenon makes your mind scream to get away, that this should not happen, but that same primal force smooths your heartbeats and croons to your inner animal that this is okay, this is comforting. As if this was a mother or father holding their child after a nightmare. You relax and let the being inside.

My child, one of many, you return to my waters so briefly... how my heart longs for all of you to come back to my wings as you were eons past, but how it soars with pride at the things you have all created. My child, you are strong, you are brave, and you are worthy. You are loved, I hope you know. Always you are loved, even if it is from afar... the shifting, multitudinous voice sounds sad. Watery talons twitch to reach toward you as if to embrace you and never let go, but they remain back, hovering, itching. The whirlpool eyes shine with fierce pride and love. It makes the tone of their words seem not so sad after all. The being’s body language makes it seem as if it wished to say more, but that it struggled with the words to form their thoughts, whatever those thoughts could possibly be. A faint song echoes in the back of your mind. It is sung in a language so ancient it is not made of true words, but the meaning of the sounds and the tune you understand clearly in your heart of hearts. Over the song, the voice comes again.

Go... make empires rise and fall, make family and friend, live and laugh as you should, run freely with wave or wind; be alive and well. Know, my babe, you have strength as unending as my sea, your sea, the ancient world in us all. May you achieve all you wish to conquer. Go, go now...

The water apparition in front of you disappears with a graceful splash, the now-risen sun bringing sacred light to the kingdom at your back. Flying droplets of the vanishing being’s splash sparkle like tiny diamonds in the new light. Water returns to the shore in mighty yet gentle waves. Your head spins and you feel as if you’d been standing upon that gilded sand shore for millennia, watching and waiting for that encounter, though in reality it had only been five minutes. A new breath of life lights your heart from the words the creature had shared with you and peace steals over you. Slowly, calmly, you continue your seaside stroll until the sun perched firmly on the glittering blue horizon, ready to take on the day.

Later you would come to ask about what you had seen upon the tide. Citizens of the kingdom would tell you that you had seen Tethys, a being as old as the world, the namesake of the eastern sea. A deity long past their worshipful prime but who had helped shaped the world and its inhabitants. Tethys, the Mother and the Father, both Daughter and Son, Brother and Sister, and Friend. It was expressed that to receive a visit from the kingdom’s deity was special for an outsider such as yourself, and that you should feel honored. “Take their words to heart, traveler, for Tethys is wise and watches over us all, wishing for all of their children a happy life, even though many no longer live in their seas. Remember where you have come from to get to where you are now, and reflect upon the great people in your journey. Stay strong and be wise.” And, as you walked away from the Kingdom of Satiir Rho, a feeling of being watched— no, guided, permeated your path. You turned your eyes one last time to the sea, the sun now setting and the sea aglow with the little organisms, you swore you could see swirling golden eyes watching you fondly, sadly, as you went on your way.
