Born to high-class parents in a wealthy clan, amidst eight siblings, Kani found it difficult to attract attention. It seemed that each and every one of his siblings was worth his parent's attention much more than he for some reason he did not understand. He began to act out, seeking acknowledgement, which did not endear him to his family at all. It came to a head in a heated, nearly-violent confrontation with his mother. The next day, he ran away to the Crystalspine Reaches, where he lived alone in the forest for over a month before nearly succumbing (once winter came) to pneumonia. Ristala came across him and most likely saved his life. Once he was healthy enough to leave, he did not. He stayed. He felt safe in the presence of the two enormous guardians, and more importantly he felt loved.

A need for attention has never really left him. Kani is a friendly, extroverted dragon, but his carefree nature only angered his home clan, and when he fled home, he found freedom he never had at home in the woods, but there was nobody to share it with. He is much happier with the Broken Rock clan, even after they lost their lair to beastclans. He has yet to claim a serious job, though, preferring instead to lounge around and help out with odd jobs when needed. He has a surprisingly sweet singing voice, and Sukiel and Ristala have started hinting for him to use it.

If Sukiel and Ristala are his adoptive parents, Aratus is his adoptive little brother. He found the fae abandoned one night in the edge of the Starwood and took him in. Learning to read Aratus' frills took time and effort, as well as make sense of his monotone speech, but he was the first dragon to do so. Aside from Aqua -- Aratus' mate -- Kani is the dragon most important to him. Although their personalities wildly vary, they are inseparable. Often, Aratus rides around on Kani's head or back, clinging to his feathers, just enjoying each other's company.
