A hatchling, much-beloved, just like any other.

Nelaime’s life did not have the easiest of beginnings. The egg from which she emerged was found inexplicably alone and floating on a shrinking ice floe — its shell still (miraculously) held warmth when it was discovered and quickly gathered by Caerulea. She was hatched months later after persistent incubation and tending, still small and sickly, with wings that did not seem to want to dry, and skin rubbed free of fur and callused with hardened skin. Nelaime’s eyesight is very clouded, so she relies on her ability to sense light to navigate the world around her.

Despite numerous ailments, Nelaime is a very energetic child and eagerly follows her parents as they go about their daily tasks. She cannot help West with his more volatile alchemic brews, but he narrates each step carefully and nurtures her interest with all the patience and understanding of a wizened teacher. Caerulea teaches her the names of plants and helps her to read the same stippled words they have had to adapt to after the loss of their own vision.
