Carrion's Arcane studies took him all over Sornieth, to measure and map the intensity of each Deity's magical aura, depending on the observer's distance. During his travels in Plague-touched territories, he ventured a little too close to the Wyrmwound and was struck by an infectious disease which nearly killed him – and it should have, according to his caregivers. Not only did the virus mutate his epidermis, giving him a meat-like, disgusting appearance, it also stripped him of his Arcane powers and gave him a taste for flesh.
Despite regular treatment, unprovoked wounds kept tearing his carmine skin open, soaking his bandages in blood and lymph, as a constant reminder of his new link to the Plaguebringer. Blinded by his traumatic experience, he believed he was chosen, and remodeled in Her image. In Her honour, he started to call himself by his current name.

After it became clear that the illness was no longer contagious, he left his quarantine unit and wandered to the Shifting Expanse, in an attempt to pursue his research project, before finally settling in the Carrion Canyon, among the members of the only Clan who welcomed him despite his condition.
