An unlikely alliance
by yours truly, excuse my crappy non-native English
xxxxxxxRuins that stretched from the sea to the depths of the Tangled Wood. White sandy shores by the Tsunami Flats giving way to the dark purple terrain of the Foxfire Bramble, and dozens of Ghostlit Ruins side by side with newly built but abandoned homes and warehouses. xxxxxxxShe had an eye for finding treasure, his new intern. She heard of the area so she found a contact they could negotiate with. It was now a matter of meeting him and discussing a possible arrangement. xxxxxxxThe guild was finally close to coming to life. Farris couldn't hold his excitement. As he flew over the area with Charlotte, he could picture the city in his mind: the harbour, the dock, the fishing town, the armada, the hatchling caretaking school. xxxxxxxEverything was finally lining up, and fate was on their side. xxxxxxxThey stopped right in front of the dark woods. Deep inside, was the sole member of the so-called Nilfay Coven who still lived on these areas. Farris gulped, for he was no good against magic. They had hoped to wait until Robbie was back from his journey but their contact insisted on this very day. They didn't have Robbie, their warrior. He couldn't risk Nephilim or Adalon, so the two came on their own. xxxxxxxIt made Farris think that maybe they should learn how to fight too, for safety measure. They couldn't rely on Robbie forever, specially as everything pointed towards their third sibling being their bribe master and emissary. He would be out often. xxxxxxxTwo minutes before the ruins and things were already harder than he anticipated. xxxxxxx– We aim higher or aim at nothing, hm? – He asked Charlie. She scoffed. xxxxxxx– Scaredy cat. – She ventured into the woods while he kept right behind her through the mist and brambles until they found a small round temple. xxxxxxxBefore it was a cabbage plantation, some wired fencing for the chickens and a drying clothes pole. The two raised an eyebrow. They were expecting something grand worthy of the last of the Nilfay Sorcerers, not some cosy farm ruin. xxxxxxxAfter a silent discussion, they came to the only possible solution and so they started clapping their hands to let them know of their arrival. The chickens scattered from the noise. xxxxxxx– Aye, would you look at that! You lot look fancier than I pictured! – A skinny and visibly tipsy skydancer came out of the ruins, shoo-ing the chickens around until he was right in front of them, wired fence between the three. – This be Fabien at your service, your majesty. You must be Merry and Charles. xxxxxxx– Farris and Charlotte. xxxxxxx– No judgement! xxxxxxxThe Fabien Skydancer laughed at his own joke. By his side, Charlie smugly smiled too. Farris' only reaction was to clear his throat before speaking. xxxxxxx– Well, you must be aware why we're here. I believe my intern reached out with our proposal. xxxxxxx– Ay, lad. I wish I could say I knew where I put your twenty-something page contract, but honestly, I don't... – He made a pause looking over his shoulder. – Know. xxxxxxxFarris clenched his fists. He had spent hours working on the contract and apparently, this Fabien dragon didn't even bother reading it. xxxxxxx– Well, since I imagine you have already read through it, shall we jump straight to settling the business then? – He said in a single angry go. xxxxxxx– Chill, down, Merry! – Charlie said, giving him a pat on the back. – Why don't we go over the contents of the contract just be sure we're all in the same page? – She smiled at him then at the Fabien Dragon. xxxxxxx– Sounds good to me! Hit me, baby. – The skydancer leaned over the wired fencing while Farris took a slight step back. xxxxxxxThe Fabien Dragon watched Farris as he described his plan. His guild. They were at meagre three ships at this point, but they had obtained massive success with just that. At this point, there were six of them, but soon contact letters to other clans would reach them with replies and potential new allies would be moving to join them. Trading routes were being established focusing on the eastern and northern coast of the Sea of a Thousand Currents, from the Shifting Expanse all the way to, potentially, the Tangled Wood. Farris hoped to one day see the business deal on all surrounding coasts. To do so, they would need a base, a safe haven where allied ships could come trade goods and rest between their journeys. They would offer safety and passage to all allied clans as well as security of their nearby trading routes, escorting parties for the right price. xxxxxxx– You don't have to explain anymore, I can see it. Caramaelstrom Bay would be the perfect docking place, thanks to Watchisland and the Broken Janes. – The skydancer said between bites on a banana. xxxxxxx– Oh, is that what they're called? – Charlie said with humour. – That's what we think too, we could see the calm waters surrounding that big beach. That leaves the business of how do we buy these lands from you. xxxxxxx– Buy? I'm not the Coven Leader, so I can't sell them to you. – Fabien said in a dry and sarcastic tone that made very clear he was having a lot of fun. xxxxxxx– I thought the Coven had disbanded when local magic was depleted. – Farris questioned. xxxxxxx– Ah, and wouldn't you like how convenient for you that would be, sparkboy? – He sneered in a joke. xxxxxxxCharlie raised a hand before Farris lost his patience. xxxxxxx– How about leasing us the Coven grounds and managing rent and profits from our guild? That way, when the Coven Leaders decide what to do with the Nilfay Ruins, they'll have the funds to do it. – The task-oriented Charlotte suggested with a raised eyebrow. xxxxxxx– How much of a leasing profit are we talking about? xxxxxxx– How would twenty thousand treasure and fifteen gems monthly sound? – Farris said the exact amount he had thought when making math plans. Obviously, he had a backup plan. Renting the place had once crossed his mind. xxxxxxxThe skydancer closed his eyes, peeling another banana and eating it, then a third. Farris kept watching him eat patiently waiting for his response. xxxxxxx– No can do. – He tossed the banana peels over his shoulder. – That means it would take almost fifty years to make as much money as the sales price. Coven is being re-established before that. xxxxxxx– You cannot... – Farris took a deep breath. – You can't be serious. xxxxxxx– Am serious, Merry. Magic is coming back in about twenty or so years, then after twenty-five Coven Leaders are returning. xxxxxxx– I believe our offer is really generous, Mister Fabien, to turn it down shows a lack of planning skills. xxxxxxx– To think a dragon would doubt a water seer's ability to see the future. – Fabien dramatically shook his head. – This world is shade-touched, indeed. xxxxxxx– Would you excuse us for a moment, Monsieur Fabien? xxxxxxx– Sure, Charles. xxxxxxxFarris kept staring at the skinny skydancer even as Charlie pulled him away from the ruin. She violently pushed him against a tree, which snapped him out of his anger. xxxxxxx– What?! xxxxxxx– Are you out of your mind?! You just mocked him, you knock-noc! – She shoved him against the tree again, and he pushed her back. xxxxxxx– He's turned down our offer! – He pointed towards the route they came from. xxxxxxx– Then we think of a new one! xxxxxxx– I'm not offering him any more than we already did! Our offer is really generous for derelict ruins we'll have to retouch completely! xxxxxxx– The ruins are tacky but the harbour, Farris! The bay! This geography is perfect, the position, the surrounding waters... We can't afford to miss this chance! The buildings are ready, we may not like how they look, but we can settle right in straight away. Our allies will soon give their answer, but we don't have our guild established. xxxxxxxHe groaned and roared because he knew she was right. This place was ideal for their plans. Nephilim was a diligent researcher and was good with maps. She vouched for the nearby currents, for the weather, for the rocky terrain. This was the perfect place for an ambitious guild like theirs. It had to be here. xxxxxxx– What do you suggest? – He said, after cleaning his sweat from his brow with a cloth. xxxxxxxHis snapper non-sister walked around a little, thinking. Farris cleared his mind and took a moment to meditate just a bit. He was awful at meditating, but at least, he stopped seeing the skydancer's smug face for a few blessed minutes. xxxxxxx– On top of the monthly income, let's offer him a percentage of the guild's profit. xxxxxxx– Absolutely not! xxxxxxx– I'm saying the percentage of profit, I'm not offering him a board seat or power of decision over our business. Consider him our first investor. xxxxxxxIt took a while for him to swallow his pride, but he conceded. He crossed his arms, then folded his wings. With a scowl, he looked back to see Charlotte had done just the same. Perhaps he mimicked her without noticing. xxxxxxx– One point o-five per cent of monthly profit; no power to interfere with the guild; Coven activities cannot take place near the shores; Coven activities cannot damage guild's property, business or employees; Clan leadership remains with Coven; Coven cannot break contract for the coming hundred years, the guild can give a five-year notice in case of departing Coven lands; any Coven magic activity must be informed to the guildmasters and agreed with before-hand; xxxxxxxHe said almost in a single go with a deadpan tone. Fabien raised an eyebrow, smug smiles and all but he had a black chicken on his arms now. Charlotte nodded while Farris was explaining. He could tell she was angry, too, although she managed to keep a neutral expression. xxxxxxx– I don't see any mention of my monthly income. xxxxxxx– He forgot. It remains at twenty thousand treasure, fifteen gems, like before. – She said. – Plus the guild's monthly participation on profit. xxxxxxx– That's for the Coven, not for me. xxxxxxx– Oh, right. – Charlie faked a smile. – Then for you, those are the rates. xxxxxxx– Let me see what the other Coven members think of it. xxxxxxxThe two looked at each other, confused. Neph had said he was the last Coven member and neither had any reasons to doubt her words. They saw the skydancer step into his chicken coop and disappear for a moment. When he returned, he had the black leather folder with the contract inside and a hoard of chickens at his toll. xxxxxxx– You shall find the terms already amended. I expect a new version of it would be ready soon and I can come over to sign. I believe you will be taking the old Halls of Reception as your Guildmaster Quarters, so I shall meet you five there tomorrow. There is a ship coming that I believe belongs to your third sibling. He, too, shall be here in time for my signature. xxxxxxxCharlie picked the contract from Fabien's hands in an angry motion, then started passing the pages. Farris saw her eyes widen when she turned over a page. She handed him the paper and there, he read the exact same terms he had just told Fabien, down to the percentages and rates. xxxxxxxThe two looked at the skydancer in a recoil, Charlotte quickly shuffling the contract back inside the folder. Farris gulped, he really wasn't good against magic. xxxxxxx– Don't look so severe, Farris. This is the start of a great clan all dragons in Sornieth will look up to. The beginning of the Navigator Guild and the rebirth of the Nilfay Coven! xxxxxxx– I... xxxxxxx– It was a great pleasure to do business with you both. Make sure you go back the woods walking. Good things and good times are ahead of all of us! – He said to both before picking up another chicken and moving its wing to a motion like she was waving goodbye at them. – I shall take my leave before my food burns on my stove. I will see you both tomorrow, Merry, Charles. xxxxxxxWith that, the skydancer disappeared inside his ruins, the chickens following him inside. Farris and Charlie stayed in silence as they started to walk back to shore where Nephilim and Adalon would be waiting for the news of the negotiation. xxxxxxxRight before they left the dark woods, Farris noticed a small egg forgotten between vines. Its surface was cold, but as soon as Farris picked it up, the egg warmed up. xxxxxxxA sign of good fortune, Fabien would tell him the next morning. Good things were ahead of them. xxxxxxxThey signed the contract and established the guild thanks to that strange and unlikely alliance. It seemed like magic was also on their side. | x |
