Orinthia
Kind | Fanciful | Quiet

"If you are making mistakes, at least you are doing something."

Orinthia has never been much for parties. The loud, fracas celebrations were something she usually tended to watch from afar, enjoying the festivities in her own quiet way.

This year felt different. She craved the joyous attitudes of the other dragons, and the feeling of lightheartedness of being in the center of the music and dancing and art. With her familiar Pomelo riding on her shoulders, she set out with her friends Iris and Pascal for the sunflower fields.

“I hope there will be Sunbeam Rotala,” Pascal says as they approach the festival, “Or some delicious Tropical Seaslugs. I’m so hungry.”

“As long as the buffet is nicely organized, I don’t mind what they serve,” Iris says, and Orinthia shakes her head at her friends.

The festival is full of bright and cheerful music, with sunflowers decorating every object, and still the fields are full of them. They hadn’t been exaggerating when they said it was the largest harvest they had ever seen.

“Food!” Pascal says happily, and scampers off towards the buffet line like a hatchling.

“Shall we see what activities they have planned?” Iris wonders, and Orinthia nods, following her friend through the crowds of dragons.

On her shoulder, Pomelo sheds a few peddles, looking around anxiously. “It’s alright,” Orinthia assures him, turning her muzzle to give him a gentle nudge. “There isn’t anything to be afraid of on festival days.”

Pomelo settles back between her shoulder blades with a gentle huff that seems to say We’ll see about that.

“Oh,” Iris says, nodding her head at a table to their right, “Pressed flower displays! Go on, Orinthia, make something beautiful,” and she nudges her towards the table. “You always do.”

That wasn’t necessarily true, but Orinthia considered the table. She sits, wrapping her tail around herself carefully. There are beautiful flowers of every kind scattered across it, and several other dragons are carefully putting together little decorations.

Art has always come easy to Orinthia, in a way that sometimes felt a bit like weaving her own magic. She begins working, weaving petals together, pressing the flowers in layers, attaching some glue here and gently ripping paper with her claws there. She becomes absorbed in the art, and as dragons around her come and go, and the music changes, and the sun starts to shift in the sky, Orinthia’s eyes never leave her creation.

After some time, the size of her creation begins to take shape, and a crowd starts to form behind her. Orinthia hardly notices. The music around her fills her head, and she hums along as she continues with her craft.

“Orinthia?” Iris’ voice pulls her back out of her musings, coming over to her after what must have been hours. “What’s going on?”

Orinthia places her final sunflower atop her creation and backs away, letting her shoulders relax.

“Oh, my,” Iris says, staring up at the giant image. “Is that--”

“The Lightweaver,” Orinthia agrees, smiling gently. “Remade in flowers.”

The towering deity is a grand sight, and many dragons gather around to stare at it in wonder. In the setting sun, it seems to glow gently, bringing a peaceful feeling to all who look at it.

“Look out!” The call comes from behind the flower table, and before any of the dragons gathered round can react, a large Snapper comes barreling through the area, bursting through the center of the flower sculpture and then rolling on past it and down the field.

“Oh my, oh my,” a group of tiny Fae’s skitter past after the rolling Snapper dragon, following him down the hill as quickly as their little wings can carry them.

When the commotion comes to an end, Orinthia and Iris look back at her sculpture to see that it has been completely destroyed, all of the flowers torn from one another and left in a large pile.

Iris lets out a tiny giggle, and Orinthia, in looking at her friend, begins to gently laugh as well.

“Uhhhhh,” Pascal grunts, coming up beside them. “What have I missed?”

“Are you alright?” Orinthia wonders a Pascal sways.

“Well, my seventeenth Sunbeam Rotala might have been a mistake,” Pascal says sheepishly, and then gestures to the flowers. “Looks like I wasn’t the only one.”

Orinthia hums in agreement. “Well, if you are making mistakes, at least you are doing something. In these times, that’s worth something, I think.”

“I’m glad you came out with us,” Iris says to her, gently nudging her shoulder.

Orinthia smiles at the pile of flowers as a hatchling dives into them with its siblings, and looks over at her friend. “I am, too.”
