Golden Son - A Tonaltzintli Story

The sun rose upon the world on the fifth day of Tonaltzintli's awakening. Yet, as the moon overtook it, the world was grey and dim and Tonaltzintli felt sick for seeing it. Upon the land there was great darkness, and many of the warriors looked to the goddess Xipe Totec - not in fear but for permission to hunt the great beast that brought forth the darkness. Many had gone, all had died, and the young man saw not ruin but to prove himself. Tonaltzintli went before his mother as the other warriors had, asking the goddess's permission for the right to hunt prey that might otherwise be hers. She gave it, for her son would make her proud or die trying.

All day, Tonaltzintli stalked the beast with the claws of some great monitor lizard and the wings of an eagle as long as the largest of sails, for he flew just as fast and could walk further for he did not need rest. As he came upon it, he saw its furred, strange body like that of a twisted panther, and a head full of sharp teeth from just the same. It stole the light from the sun as it basked, and it enraged Tonaltzintli. The beast mocked him, howling laughter like some monkey from beyond the rainforest's heart when it saw his fury.

In the night they fought until the beast was too wounded, until the beast was no longer shaking with laughter but with fear. Tonaltzintli's spear tore into the beast again and again until it fled from him towards the jungle. The young man pursued it until the trees were too dense for even the light to follow until the beast's black fur blended in with all around it. Tonaltzintli returned to his mother and to his people victorious, and the sun shown golden upon him, its champion.
