To ask a Banescale what fire they are like, one would receive many answers. The billowing blazes of a wildfire, the searing heat of a volcano, the flickering flames of a campfire, the crackling tongues of a bonfire. Few would describe themself as a candle, small and silent, watching the world from afar. And yet…

Tonic would.

Tonic is the silent watcher of the clan, settled among the bees. His fire is there, as all Banescales, but it is quiet, tamed. Settled neatly among his love and his thoughts, his fire does not sing and dance as others do. He does not sing and dance. He simply watches.

Perhaps this peculiar personality was brought about by his childhood. His egg was discovered among the ashes of a wildfire in the Sunbeam Ruins and was promptly brought home by Struve in what should have been a more concerning manner. Struve, attempting to somewhat mend relations with her daughter, gifted the egg to Amber, who was as kind and gentle as Tonic would be. When the Banescale hatched, Amber became like a mother to him, teaching him quiet kindness and gentleness to all. It was of no surprise that Tonic quickly found himself friends among the bees, who would quietly buzz around him as he watched.



He wasn’t sure what he was looking for really, but he saw much. He saw the dazzling rays of sunlight reflect on dewdrops in the morning, the bright lights in the eyes of hatchlings as they explored the wildflower fields. He saw the flickering of fire pits, the fluttering of fireflies as they rose from the ground in the late hours. He saw much, and he found peace in it all.

Then, one day, he saw what he was looking for.



A Banescale, brighter than him with dazzling gilded stripes, fluttering about the fields he often watched. She seemed to be… dancing, flying high into the sky to snap towards the sun before plummeting back down in a beautiful array of light. Again and again, she would fly and drop, crowing towards the light in the sky. No, the fire. She was brighter than all the lights Tonic had seen so far, full of warmth and wrath and something entirely else. Not quite loud and brash, but certainly louder than him.

Tonic was enraptured. For days after, he would watch this strange Banescale, unseen on the edges of the field, loving her all the way.

And then, he was seen.
