Malvynn and his twin were born of one of the Arcanist's dearest followers: an exiled disciple who quickly rose to his attention because of her affinity for magic. She was one of the few mortals entrusted with the knowledge that the Arcanist harbored a Shade-touched relic deep within the Observatory, hidden from the other gods. The Shade Mirror, as it was called, was slotted into the Observatory's telescope itself enabling the Arcanist to see the very darkness that still swarmed beyond Sornieth's atmosphere. However while temptation was gentle for a god, for a mortal it was overwhelming, and the Arcanist failed to realize the obsession the Mirror churned in his followers until it was too late. The Observatory saw a mortal uprising that was ultimately quelled by the Arcanist's casters and his loyal son, the latter of which was able to turn back time before the rebellion began. Retracting time did not erase the existence of the disciple's twin sons by the Arcanist: Vision, bearing his father's traits, and Malvynn, bearing the corruption of the Mirror. The Arcanist, unwilling to bear the physical reminder, cast the twins from the Starfall Isles and into the care of their brother Ajani.
Vision and Malvynn thus joined the Scholars of Light when Ajani did, and came of age within the Scholars' care. They were entrusted on their first quest when the blood-seer deduced the Wingsinger was harboring a powerful half-child within Cloudsong, old as even Ajani. Vision and Malvynn smuggled Runewing from Cloudsong, though on their journey back to the Scholars, Runewing pleaded with his new companions to help him find his mother: an Ancient, long since locked away for her insurgence.
