The forest was a lost cause, Hael decided- it was serving her intended purpose of slowing the emperor down, but the fire was spreading, the dense smoke thickening in the air a warning that the trees wouldn't last.
A blast of hot air seared over her head, the dragon tipping and diving to avoid it at the last minute, dipping through the choking layer of ash until she could see the lit undergrowth and- there! A final burst of speed pushed her into a clearing. A river, rich with Tidelord's blessing.
(There was no deity above their head and behind its gaze, just soulless eyes and snapping maws and rotting flesh and death defied.)
(She shouldn't be here.)
Hael hit the water. On cue, the emperor burst from over the trees, the too-many arms grasping as its eyes blazed, flames flickering over its form and building in its mouths without pause. Without control.
It soared over the river, over her head, on uneven but powerful wings that easily kept the body airborne even as its feathers slowly scattered like embers.
Now-!
Hael lashed at its underbelly, sharp claws carving into the dead flesh with far too much ease.
(Could emperors still feel pain?)
(Did it matter?)
She felt the roar more than she heard it, the sound staggering her. Hael barely caught herself on trembling wings, then shaky legs, dragging herself further out of range before the beast could turn- it wouldn't do much good, not with how large the emperor was, the steam as water met mismatched legs doing little to hide its form.
And turn it did, all three heads narrowing their empty gazes on her.
It was awful.
In undeath, the heads of its composite dragons were hollowed out, muscle and tendons broken down to feed its magic, its motion, and its legendary hunger.
That was the thing, wasn't it? Emperors were little more than mindless beasts that slaughtered, and feasted, and pillaged, in an attempt to sate an emptiness that could never be fulfilled. A painful, horrific existence where non-existence would be mercy.
Hael stared into the faces of death as they snarled, stained fangs stark against rotten gums and sunken sockets unseeing. Her gaze wandered upwards, looking for the smoke-stained sky and aid that wouldn't arrive in time.
(She shouldn't have come.)
The emperor bellowed, flame rising in its mouth, and she screeched a defiant cry.
If she was to go down, she would go down fighting.
(art by the lovely laughingidiot, who i must note stayed up two hours for this and refused to charge me a thing!)
