Servant of the Fae Court ● Created by the King
abcdefg The first thing it sees it a bright pink set in purple. Later, it will recognize these colors in its own form. At the moment, it recognizes the being in front of it as its creator. The dragon watched it with curiosity, as if wondering what it will do next. It stood still, waiting for direction. The dragon took several steps back, appraising his creation. It blankly returned the gaze, uncaring of the room or its sudden consciousness.

A few moments ago, it was a few scraps of cloth. Now, it was aware.

"Come here," its creator ordered.

It put one foot in front of the other, walking for the first time. Unlike a hatchling, it didn't lose its balance or fall, but it still moved the with the same unsureness. When it was in front of its creator again, the dragon smiled at it. Or maybe, it would later realize, he smiled at his own skill and accomplishment.

"You have a simple purpose," he said to it. "You will work around the palace, doing whatever needs to be done. Cleaning, cooking, maintaining appearances."

Cleaning cooking, maintaining appearances, it mentally noted. It didn't know what the last order meant, but there would be time to clarify.

Later, it learned. There was a very clear image that its creator wanted to uphold. Luxury for the residents. A life of ease. Its own creation was to ensure the dragons never worked a day in their lives.

"There will be others like you, of course," he added lightly. "But you're the first success. You're important."

Important. It was important. It clung on to those words for years to come.

It was important.

As time went on, she learned. She learned about dragons, about her creator, about herself. She decided to be "she." More than an object, she decided. The other dragons treated her with some semblance of respect, saying please and thank you, but forgetting about her as soon as she left their sights.

As time went on, other servants were created, each carefully stitched and brought to life. Button eyes suddenly flashed pink, seeing the world, having thoughts, unaware that their existence will be confined to a single building.

As time went on, she stared at the world outside the palace. First, it was the desire to help Aconite in the gardens, but she was denied. Then, it was listening to each new resident's stories of the outside. They spoke of different regions, different cultures, and she realized she couldn't imagine the outside world. One day, she was dusting the library when she saw an atlas. A book with words and images of everywhere she'd never seen. She traced coastlines and mountain ranges, wondered about ice caps and deserts, about snow and sand and salty air. Forests made of trees, rather than the bamboo surrounding the palace.

The next time she dusted the library, the atlas was gone.

A pang of sadness hit her.

The other servants were happy. They did their duties, showing no desire to go outside or see the world. Though her master's creations became more refined, she was still the head of the servants by virtue of being the first.

Important, he told her.

The notion that she cannot leave was not a mere assumption, untested and based on fear.

She wanted to see the world, to feel the sunlight, to leave the same rooms she walked everyday. The gardens, she reasoned, are still on her creator's land. She could water the plants, remove the weeds, maintain appearances.

She could not.

As she walked outside the door, she felt the sunlight along with pain.

Her joints didn't just ache, the seams holding her together were unravelling. She was falling apart, unable to hold herself together, knowing she would have to go to her creator and confess to be put together again. The halls to his chambers were mercifully empty, neither dragon nor servant witnessing the consequences to her disobedience.

His claws skimmed her seams, the gesture threatening to rip them completely.

For a panicked moment, she thought he would throw away his failed project. There are more servants now, and she wasn't needed anymore.

"Why do you want to leave?" He asked her.

His eyes burned into hers, and she knew to lie.

"I wanted to help Aconite with the garden," she said, a statement she's said before.

He nodded lightly at her excuse, claws still following her seams. Up her arm and onto her neck. She trembled under his touch. Her creator was not kind nor merciful. One sudden bout of anger and he would to tear her to shreds and replace her with another servant.

"Help Aconite," he repeated. "Aren't you one to take initiative. Even when you know you aren't allowed outside."

"I'm sorry," she gasped. "I'm sorry, I won't go outside again, just–please help me!"

Up and down her seams. Contemplating.

"Please," she begged.

The claws stopped. Tightened around her arm.

"Let's compromise, hmm?" The phrase struck fear into her, but she nodded. "I'm sure Aconite will appreciate the help in her gardens, and you're meant to help everyone. But if you venture past the gardens..."

He didn't need to finish. She knew.

But she could go outside. Not far, barely out of her creator's sight, but outside.

"Thank you," she breathed. "Thank you, thank you."

He smiled, more at her gratitude and his own perceived mercy than his kindness.

"First, let's get you fixed up. I suppose it might hurt. The last time, you weren't awake for this."

He was right. It did hurt, but the thought of outside kept her distracted.

Aconite was neither grateful nor annoyed by her presence in the gardens. The fae gave instructions, and she followed. There was no reason for Aconite to look at her.

Sometimes, when she was in the garden and enjoying the sunlight, she would glance at the borders and wonder about the rest of the world. She would wonder, until she remembered that she was already outside, a mercy that none of the other servants would be granted. Just her, because she was important. The first. She had wants and desires that the others did not, wants and desires that her creator made sure were absent in the others.

She looked back at the plants.

This was enough, she lied to herself.

This was enough.
