Biography

Bottom of The Pit.
author: the overseer

Where are the researches of The Chaos Alliance?

I've been long awaiting some enlightenment on the mystery looming over my town. The researches still functioning here finally gave me clearance for entry into the area of The Pit.
Ever since the alliance had disbanded my mind has been full of questions about that place. The old mine repurposed for their system of labs is fascinating on its own, but I was always more intrigued about the workers of the alliance.
What led them to such radical actions?
What did they know that we did not?
In the past, they have stressed strongly enough that the area will remain off limits to everyone but those participating in the project. Many of my own left the town to join them.
Why didn't they allow me in sooner?
Even after what happened later I could barely pry them away from their passion project. The select of about a hundred that I allowed to stay were the ones I knew I could trust. But now that I haven't heard from them for so long I do have my doubts.
What's down there?

***

When we lowered into the entrance tunnel, I was caught off guard by how tall the walls were, and by how endless the tunnel appeared. The four small dragons headed down in silence. I followed.
The lighting fluently changed from soft daylight to bright lanterns and the long hall began branching into little rooms as we descended deeper. The ceiling soon began enclosing on the top of my head, getting lower and lower.
My company, the few researchers that still regularly reported to me, were strangely silent. I suppose I should not have expected a detailed lecture from a group of cave dwelling scientists.
It was so empty and silent. The rooms were way below my waist, but I could still see through the glass walls. They were all empty or abandoned. Lots of the labs looked like someone dropped their work and never returned to it. It did make sense for some space to go to waste, but not to this extent.
I requested to see the rest of the team, but I got no answer. Instead, I was led deeper.

There were no stairs. The floor was smooth, like it was carved by a lazy river. The longer we walked, the more it appeared like there was indeed water here at some point. The walls turned from polished stone to moist soil, and the air turned humid.
I couldn't hear any droplets hitting the ground. In fact, I heard nothing but our footsteps. But the surroundings appeared wetter, and wetter.
Soon, steps turned into squelching and I found the ground to be sticking to my feet. The lights didn't follow us down here, all we could see was illuminated by a little lantern the leader of the group was carrying. Our surroundings were glistening with reflections. It was hard to make out the shape of the tunnel by now. There were no longer walls, nor a floor, just a shapeless hoard of slime surrounding us.
I thought I saw the bottom of the tunnel, but it could've just been a puddle.

Then, the tour stopped, and the guide thanked me for my company. I was confused, but no matter how many questions I asked, they wouldn't say another word to me.
I didn't understand what sense I was supposed to make out of what I have seen down here. The whole long walk led nowhere and I got no additional insight.
I wondered why the team wouldn't address my concerns, and if they were trying to show me something I wasn't seeing.
…Where is the rest of the researchers?

And that's when it occurred to me.

We were standing in them.
