Snekatiefr asks: Radina, where did you get your gifts of divination? Were you born with them, were they gifted upon you by magical means? What about your eyes, the ones that can see into other worlds? Where did you obtain these abilities? ....................................................................................................................... Radina lounges upon a nest of pillows, her many eyes blink in perfect syncrecity.“Ah, now that is quite the tale. Take a seat, but do be careful not to touch anything here or you may find the consequences unpleasant.” “Now. Let us begin. The answers to your questions are in fact intertwined and may be answered in one story.” “When I was but a hatchling, it was my fate to live near to the ruins of a palace from a long fallen kingdom. As any child would, I became curious. I went to my dear friend Florian -who at the time was still a spiral- and I said to him ‘let’s go to the ruins and explore, surely it will do us no harm. Our parents will hardly notice our absence, we’ll be back before the sun begins to set.” He was hesitant at first, but I did not l did not let up my pleas. Days passed by, and it was not long before he relented. We set off then. I was excited, he was nervous. It would be the farthest out we’d ventured so far into our lives. The trip was pleasant at its start, all vine-ridden walls and butterfly havens. Had we gone no further it would have been simple harmless fun, but I wanted more. I wanted to see inside, to know what hidden treasures lay within. And so we ventured deeper into those labyrinthine ruins. Further and further until we were very much lost, and the sun had long since set. The spirits began to roam then. I could not see them then, but we could hear their mournful wails. We ran, directionless, hoping that if we ran far and fast the sounds would stop. Instead we found ourselves in the treasury. That room was filled with strange and magical items of the most dangerous sort, much like the ones I have told you not to touch. I was young then and did not know what I do now. I went to hide behind a mirror (the reflective sort, not the living), but my tail caught itself upon an urn and that urn shattered upon the ground, covering me in ancient ashes. Those ashes were those of the mad king, who had been plagued with visions all his life. His energy still lingered strong upon them and when they touched my skin they fused into it and took the form of eyes. I was cursed with his sight, though in new form. My eyes had been closed and so they remain functional in this world, but his visionary gifts hold only the otherworld within their sight. I could see then, all the ghosts which populated the palace ruins and filled them with their wails. The shock of that first vision was too much and I could not retain consciousness. I did not wake for days. Florian remained by my side, watching over me (he was far too small to drag me back.) The energies of those ruins changed him though, and when I awoke he was no longer the dragon I had known so fondly, but the bird you see today. Since that day I have been able to see the otherworld, and the beings there taught me to read the future. As for Florian’s story, he can tell it better than I.” |
