She became aware in complete nothingness.

There was no light, no sound, no feeling. It was as if her conscience had disconnected from her body. Somehow she knew that this was wrong, that she should be anchored to a world she had never known before. She knew that this was not what was supposed to happen.

It remained like this for a very long time. She did not sleep or eat. All she could do was think. It was after what felt like many years that she started to feel the ripples in her mind - a mental power she had yet could not reach for quite yet.

The ripples grew stronger and stronger. Finally she was able to harness her great power. She imagined something she had never seen before. She created light and sound with only the power of her mind.

It began as a small speck in the distance, the slightest whisper, the tiniest tremors in her faint physical body. As the light became stronger she discovered that she could feel earth under her talons, the blood rushing through her veins. Pure joy rushed through her, and she shivered in anticipation.

She was finally waking from her sleep, after all these years.

When the blinding light finally touched her, when the roaring sound of wind almost overwhelmed her senses, she heard a voice. Her blackened eyes burned in her new vision. The words she heard next echoed in both her mind and the physical world. She knew she would never forget them.

"Wake up, Gravemoss. It's time for you to wake . . ."

~~~
When she first opened her eyes to the world, she saw a ruined city. Shadows plagued the twisting, broken pathways. Crumbling remains of once-beautiful buildings lay scattered on the ground near her talons. The sky was dark, the broken city lit only by the light of the moon. It was eerily silent, and not even the sounds of night creatures could be heard.
Something about it sent a shiver up her spine.
Gravemoss was scared. The dark void she had resided in for years had been unchanging and safe, except for when she decided to change it. Up until she woke, Gravemoss had been in control. Only now she wasn't, and it scared her more than she liked to admit, even to herself.
Cold wind rushed through the silent city, ruffling her wings. Her wings! Gravemoss raised them awkwardly, not used to having a physical body - wings and talons were still new to her. The feel of her bones and muscles was strange, but this city was too unnatural for her liking, and she wanted to get out as fast as possible.
She leaped off the mound of rubble she had awoken on, flapping her wings furiously. After only a few beats, she tumbled to the ground, sending up dust in her wake. Pain flared in her side, but she simply got up and climbed the mound of rubble again.
After several more attempts, Gravemoss managed to stay in the air. Breathing through her gritted teeth, she twisted in the sky and headed off in what felt like the right direction. Even though she was completely alone, Gravemoss grinned at the rising sun. She had won this time. She would escape the dark city and never have to return.
Little did she know how utterly wrong she was.
~~~

Storm clouds loomed ominously above her small, thin form. Gravemoss kept her head down, blackened eyes tracing the waves on the increasingly violent ocean, as if a glance skyward would trigger the dark gray clouds. Thunder boomed and lightning flashed across the dark sky, but the rain had yet to fall. She beat her wings continuously, praying the clouds would hold until she found land.

As if the thought had caused it, rain began to fall.

Cold, hard droplets pelted her feathery wings, instantly soaking them and making flying that much harder. Wind roared with the force of a thousand dragons, screaming in her ears. Thunder boomed with a crack like breaking bones, and lightning shattered the sky. A white bolt of electricity struck behind her, and she felt its heat sizzle along her tail.

Faster, faster, she thought, flapping her heavy wings. The wind was working against her, pounding her back, driving her toward the ocean. She'd been flying for so long. Her wings ached,
and her mind was tired. I can't make it any longer.

A particularly fierce gust of wind struck her like a physical blow, driving the air from her lungs and sending her tumbling toward the ocean. The last thing she felt was cold water against her side, and then Gravemoss blacked out.

~~~
Pain. Aching, throbbing pain, pulsing through her side and setting her nerves on fire. It felt like her wings had been broken and she'd been dropped from the sky a hundred times. Stretching her front talon out, Gravemoss gasped at the fresh wave of agony that rocked her body. She coughed, and seawater splashed on the sand in front of her.
Land! The pain dulled for a moment as Gravemoss realized what it meant. Her tumble into the ocean must have brought her to a beach somewhere, a safe seashore on the continent . . .
Her heart sank as her head turned and registered the truth. She was on a circular island, about thirty paces across, made of nothing but sand, stones, and a few shrubs. Blue ocean shimmered in every other direction, eerily calm after last night's storm.
Gravemoss sat up, ignoring the pain in her side, the burning in her lungs as she breathed. She would make it to the continent she had seen in her visions. No storm would stop her.
Just as she was about to take off, a shape in the corner of her eye caught her attention. No, wait - three shapes, oval eggs that shone in the sunlight. Three eggs nestled in the center of the little island, not quite hidden among the sparse ferns.
One egg was a pale, ghostly gray. Another was a glowing, pearly white, and the third was as dark as the void Gravemoss had been imprisoned in for so long. The eggs sent an odd shiver through her, and her eyes narrowed in a forgotten hatred she wasn't entirely sure was her own.
Before she knew what she was doing, Gravemoss crossed to the center of the island. Her talons reached forward, grasping for the eggs. As soon as she made contact, the strange emotion ceased, and she was left confused and a little scared.
She couldn't just leave them there. Faint memories surfaced, and Gravemoss quickly weaved a loose basket from the nearby ferns and leaves. All three of the eggs fit inside. She slung the basket over her back and looked back up at the sky, ready to brave the ocean again. A glance at the eggs on her back reassured her. She would protect them, no matter what.
She didn't know it at the time, but it wasn't the eggs that would need protecting.
