No one is quite sure if Myrrh is actually a dragon, or just something that looks like one. Either way, they’ve never caused any trouble and seem content to live in their little branch of tunnels, right next to the Barrens, so people just let them do their thing. No one’s ever seen them come above ground, and given that their eyes are incredibly sensitive to even the faintest fungal glow that illuminates the warrens, it’s not difficult to guess why. Still, this sensitivity also makes them a very useful guide through the Barrens, where they can navigate with ease even in complete darkness. Due to their inability to sustain any life, the Barrens are incredibly difficult to illuminate in the conventional way, since no bioluminescent lifeforms can take root inside, and using cut or potted samples produces light that is either incredibly short-lived, or else very weak, respectively. Bringing flames below-ground is likewise not advised, considering the ever-present danger of unexpected gas pockets. For a time, it was thought that perhaps electric lanterns imported from the Shifting Expanse might finally solve the issue, but it only took a couple disastrous expeditions — thankfully none of them anywhere near Haven — to firmly lay that idea to rest; as became immediately apparent, bringing that much light into the Barrens had… dangerous consequences, and more than one lair was lost in the aftermath to rampaging Barrow-Beasts lured too close to the settlement by the bright shine of bottled electricity. In the end, dragons entering the Barrens must either bring torches or lanterns, running the risk of explosion and cave-in, or else settle for the weak, but relatively much safer, glow of potted Glowshrooms or Lightchen, and the experience of a seasoned guide. Myrrh was actually the one to find April wandering the Barrens years ago, and indeed seems to have a sixth sense for when lost travellers nearby are in need of rescue; many of Haven’s residents owe their lives and sanity to Myrrh who, while uncomfortable with attention and preferring not to make a big fuss about it, has let slip that if any grateful dragons felt particularly moved to repay this kindness, offerings of meat, especially from surface-dwelling creatures, are always very appreciated. Their diet of underground insects and grubs is perfectly nutritious, and even tasty, but their favourite food will always be meat grown beneath the warm touch of the sun. |
