In every murder, there is always the victim.

Corpse is the gestalt soul of all those killed by unnatural means and unable to pass beyond, coalesced into the form of an emperor.

Corpse came to the clan starving, asking for a pittance of treasure. Thought to be a pilgrim to the Tidelord, Yui hesitated instead of sending him on his way, calling on the detective Kogorou to investigate his circumstances. The imperial scoffed, proclaimed him to be just another pilgrim, but Conan hesitated. He and Ran looked at one another, and the female imperial lifted Corpse who was almost as big as she was.

She carried them on her back to the lair and fed them, nursing them back to full health.

They don't remember where they came from. They don't remember who they are. Only snatches of the lives of past victims pass as visions, as dreams—nightmares.

They bleed constantly, the bandages only a stop-gap measure. It has metallized their scales, stained their wings with blood unable to be cleansed away.

But they cannot die, and so they must bear their pain for the souls of all who are murdered before their time.

"Hey, Mister. Does death scare you?" The young bogsneak named Conan asked, twitching his tail and looking up at Corpse earnestly through thick-rimmed glasses. The bogsneak was all tail it seemed, making up half his body.

"No, little one. Death does not scare us. We have died many, many times." The imperial gazed into the distance, their fiery eyes swirling with souls and heavy with the weight of past remembrance.

"Do you remember any of the deaths, any of the souls inside you?" Conan asked, his eyes gleaming with curiosity.

"You are a curious thing, aren't you?" Corpse laughed. The sound was horrifying, grating, like a thousand souls screaming at once. "Sometimes."

"Do you remember anyone named Gin?" Conan asked. "Before any of them died, I mean."

"You know that kind of evidence isn't admissible in court," Corpse said.

"Do you?" Conan pressed.

"You don't have any fear, do you little one?"

Conan just narrowed his eyes at them, face determined.

Their grin was all teeth as they let out a measured response. "Oh yes. Gin features quite frequently."
