Biography
TREEBEARD
Fangorn
The Eldest of the Ents | Shephard of the Trees
“I am not going to tell you my name, not yet at any rate.' A queer half-knowing, half-humorous look came with a green flicker into his eyes. 'For one thing it would take a long while: my name is growing all the time, and I've lived a very long, long time; so my name is like a story. Real names tell you the story of things they belong to in my language, in the Old Entish as you might say. It is a lovely language, but it takes a very long time saying anything in it, because we do not say anything in it, unless it is worth taking a long time to say, and to listen to.”
“Those were the broad days! Time was when I could walk and sing all day and hear no more than the echo of my own voice in the hollow hills. The woods were like the woods of Lothlórien, only thicker, stronger, younger. And the smell of the air!”
“Side? I am on nobody's side, because nobody is on my side, little orc.”
“Never is too long a word even for me...”
“But there, my friends, songs like trees bear fruit only in their own time and their own way: and sometimes they are withered untimely."
“Some of my kin look just like trees now, and need something great to rouse them; and they speak only in whispers. But some of my trees are limb-lithe, and many can talk to me.”
“But I spoke hastily. We must not be hasty. I have become too hot. I must cool myself and think; for it is easier to shout stop! than to do it.”
“The world is changing: I feel it in the water, I feel it in the earth, and I smell it in the air.”
Fangorn
The Eldest of the Ents | Shephard of the Trees
|
The Eldest of the Ents, Treebeard is the eldest person in Middle-earth. He was created during the Years of the Trees, before the creation of the stars. At one time, his realm was the immense forest that spanned from Beleriand and Eriador to Calenardhon. He would watch the forests dwindle over the ages. In the Third Age, Treebeard leads the last of the ents in their holdout, known as the Fangorn Forest. The Shephard of the Trees walked the early years of the world with his spouse, Fimbrethil, before Morgoth first rose up. In the Second Age, Fimbrethil and the Entwives were lost to the Ents and remain missing. Treebeard has not seen her in over 3,000 years. Treebeard led the Ents to war after Saruman destroyed much of Fangorn Forest in an attempt to raise up and supply his own army for the dark lord Sauron. The ents came out victorious, but at the loss of at least the one known as Beechbone, and they began to reestablish and expand the forest. It became known as the Treegarth of Orthanc. Special thanks to Bxy26 for help with the design and acquisition. |
