The Cold Grip of the South, the Metal Devil, or simply just Heartless, Steelhound goes by many names. This dragon is easily identifiable by his cold metal exterior and his distinct orca stripes. His motivations are known by few, but those who have met him described him as "A dragon motivated only by personal success and greed. There is nothing in his eyes as they stare through you, only a quiet contempt." Cited below is a journal entry found in an abandoned lair last occupied by this elusive criminal.

Steelhound was not always my name. I must admit to myself that I no longer know what it once was, but I know I had one. My memory is not what it once was, the physiological modifications do have their toll. I do remember my home, a little lair in Dragonhome in the rocky mountains. We were... we were metal refiners I remember now. We did a lot of business with the Lightning clans to bring them the metal they needed, and in return, they made us their advanced technology. I remember being fascinated by them as a hatchling, especially by the animatronics they made. How lifelike they looked, but once you peeled away the fake coverings, how intricate they were to make themselves appear "real." I figured that we "real" creatures were not so different, going through the motions to appear alive when in reality we are all complex machines. It was at that point that I believe my interest came from, and when I came of age I requested to be put on the caravan that traveled to the Shifting Expanse to trade.

I believe that my...parents? Or maybe they were guardians of some sort? Nevertheless, they tried to dissuade me, but they knew that I would go no matter what they thought. So I left with the caravan on my first trip. It was long and difficult, but I was aware of the trials and was more than happy to travel to reach this society of advanced technology. I believe that we were very close when it happened, in the Sunbeam Ruins. It was just another day of drudgery across the plains, but we had stopped for a short break and to admire the beautiful architecture. We had barely sat down when the group of "academics" jumped us. I would later find out that they had attacked us because we has stepped onto their "holy ground" a supposed grave of a dead prophet. Looking back, to die for legend seems so futile and such an ancient prospect that it makes me ill. Those filthy cultists slaughtered the whole group, mutilating us all for "appeasing" their prophet. There is no way to in full explain the full details of what happened next, so I shall write what the doctors in the Lightning clan later told me. I was told that the lightning clan found us when the day came we were supposed to arrive and we never came, and they sent out seekers. They...found me with my heart pulled out of my chest, sitting as an offering to their futile "god" of nothing. The seekers found me alive, but only barely. In a panic, one of them saw that a piece of the cargo we had been carrying a (shut down, but functional) steelhound with all of its parts. With the limited help they had, they "patched me up" with the parts, particularly replacing my heart with the steelhound one. When I was stable enough to move, they took me to the clan and finished healing me there.

When I awoke, I was being monitored by the doctors in the clan, and they were amazed that I had recovered. They informed me of my "condition" of the machine parts that were now a permanent part of my vascular system. I was ecstatic! I had become my own philosophy, a "living" being with non-living parts, the perfect machine. The doctors did not seem to understand my philosophy and kept telling me that "they would find a way to get it out of me" and to "just give them the time." I had no intention of going back to my previous self, but I decided to stay with the clan to learn more about their technology before I left.

After a few months had passed, I had recovered and was feeling better than ever. I had learned all I could from them and had made some more simple modifications there that made travel more tolerable. (The metabolic system is remarkably easy to change if you set your mind to it.) I tried to say my goodbyes to the clan, as they had exhausted their usefulness to me, and the doctors constant flitting and questioning was beginning to get on my nerves. They tried to...stop me I believe. I...do not remember leaving this clan but I would very much like to know how they are doing now. If anyone has anything about them please come and find me in the Southern Icefield, I moved thereafter I realized that it is much easier to keep tools and new parts clean in a cold environment. I think these journal entries help me remember. It is getting harder these days. ...Perhaps this could be solved with some more surgeries to improve memory.
