 Dr. Hal "Otacon" Emmerich was the chief engineer of Metal Gear REX. Otacon became a close friend of Solid Snake after being rescued from Shadow Moses Island in 2005. Once learning of REX's nuclear strike capabilities, Otacon joined forces with Snake. Later, he became a founding member of the anti-Metal Gear NGO Philanthropy. He also became the adoptive father of Sunny. A devoted fan of anime, his chosen nickname was derived from the Japanese animation and culture convention Otakon, which he regularly attended.
