The Coatl strolled along the fenceline, her gaze floating over the little flock of goats grazing on the other side. Two of the females were pregnant and would give birth in only a few days. Watched closely by its mother, a newborn kid wobbled unsteadily on its legs, letting out a plaintive bleat whenever it was startled by something. They were all Gelbu’s responsibility-- from the tiniest kid to the oldest billy.

Not many clans in the Starfall Isles kept livestock. In fact, not many clans in all of Sorneith kept livestock, but Gelbu’s was one of them mostly due to her own passion for tending to the creatures. Although she was a vegetarian herself, she knew that many of her clanmates required a carnivorous diet to survive. Whenever one of her goats fell fatally ill or began to succumb to the ailments of old age, she generously offered it to the clan to prevent its further suffering. In times of extreme hardship and famine, Gelbu’s clan could survive better than others thanks to the Coatl’s carefully tended flocks.

She kept a few other livestock-- a flock of sheep, some chickens, a few hogs-- but the goats were her favorite. Despite their size and relative defenselessness, the little creatures were fearless. They stood their ground against anything that challenged them-- from the largest Imperial to a hungry mountain lion. Gelbu envied their tenacity and bravery. She had always been shy and reserved and while she wasn’t ashamed of who she was, she sometimes found it difficult to speak up for herself in the presence of those who intimidated her (which was nearly everyone). At least here, tending her peaceful pastures, Gelbu was happy. The animals didn’t judge her for her shortcomings and neither did the skies, the grass, or the breeze that stirred in the trees. Out here, she was free.
