On the outskirts of the Fortress of Ends, it had snowed at least fifteen feet the night before. Giggling happily, Riyo jumped into the frozen piles, causing a poof of snowflakes to cloud up around her. Her brother, Spirit, grinned, poofing into the snow as well. They bounded around happily, grinning. This was exactly where they belonged. A shadow stretched over the snow pile. Their gazes turned upward towards the sky, horror spreading across their faces as they noticed an onslaught of Arctic Hippalectri floating in the air above them. The giant bird-creatures were at least five times as big as the pair of infant Faes. Riyo shoved her head into the snow, burrowing down into the cold fluffiness. Her only hope of escaping the attack was going down. To her surprise, the snow began to harden, packing more tightly around her. Riyo turned her head up towards the surface. At that moment, the ice began to close in, slowly filling the hole she was crouching in. Her small safe-hole began to darken dramatically. Gasping, she tried to dig further, but the ground beneath her had turned to ice. As the walls continued closing in, her heart rate rose in panic. The tunnel had shortened to just a little bit larger to herself. She cried out in terror. The ice came closer, suffocating her, trapping her inevitably. She clawed at the walls helplessly, screaming for air. Little frozen crystals built on her nose and face. Her tail hardened to the ground, her arms and legs freezing in place. Finally, as she was completely encapsulated in the snow, she closed her eyes with the last of her warmth. Then, everything disappeared. Warm palms wrapped around her shoulder, jolting her out of her frozen trance. The hand was absolutely giant, with a feeling of rocks. Riyo tried to force her eyes to fly open and scream, but she discovered that her mouth and eyelids were frozen shut. She shivered. The ice around her was melting. Finally, the ice had become warm enough for her to move. She shifted forward, opening her eyes. A huge Snapper dragon towered above her, gazing down at her curiously. Riyo curled her tail around her front paws, staring up at the giant, iridescent dragon in awe. She’d never seen a dragon who wasn't a fae before. “Hey, you okay?” the dragon asked in a surprisingly quiet voice. Riyo looked, wide-eyed, at him. “Y-y-yes-s-s-s,” she stuttered in response. The dragon smiled. “What’s your name, little one?” “R-R-Riy-o-o-o.” “I’m Solaros.” The Snapper's giant talons broke through the ice around her, closing in around her small, cowering body and pulling her back to the surface. Setting her back on her feet, he stepped away. Eyes adjusting, Riyo’s gaze landed on a group of dragons that she’d never seen before encircling her. “You’re safe now, young one.” |
