Love is irrational and unexpected and eccentric. Quite often, you don't consciously choose what you love - it just finds you. For Basalt, he found his love when he was a very young hatchling.

The little obelisk had wandered out of his nest while his guardian was speaking with someone else. The scattered boulders not far from their cave called to him and he just couldn't resist inspecting them. Unfortunately, he still wasn't very coordinated and ended up slipping when he attempted to climb the scree; a rock slide began that started with the pebbles and escalated to large boulders bouncing down and drowning out the horrified bellowing call from the hatchling's family.

When the dust died down and the clan could get closer, they figured Basalt was lost. There was no way the little dragon could have survived the weight. Shock hadn't even worn off yet for anyone to react before the ground started lightly rumbling. Watching in horrified awe, the gathered dragons saw a tunnel form in all the debris and a very dusty little Basalt wandered out. He was very startled by the reactions.

Since that time, Basalt has sought teachers who could help him learn how to use his magic. His latest, and best, resides in Chaotic Daydreams. Terrene is an elemental earth spirit who guards the clan. She took the nascent mage on as a student and he is learning how to call rocks on purpose, call shapes out of the rocks by making them shiver in just the right way to carve themselves along their fault lines, and create golems that will work tirelessly until no longer needed.

Between the learning and the affection he is getting, Basalt is sure that he will not be leaving the lair of the lunatics any time soon.
