▾ Mushi are creatures that exist close to the River of Light, the source of all life. If the talons of a dragon's paw represent all animal life, and their thumb represents plant life, then following these points through the palm and down the wrist would bring you closer to fungal and bacterial life, where the capillaries start to merge into larger veins and arteries. Here, the flow of life is less complicated, channeled more directly through these smaller, seemingly more simple organisms. Follow these arteries up the arm and into the heart, and this is where Mushi reside, where they are born. They are neither spirit nor animal, existing in the twilight between the material and ethereal worlds, simply living their intricate, incomprehensible lives.

▾ Mushi congregate in places where life is heavily concentrated, drawn to the myriad branches of the River of Light. They are neither good nor evil, malicious nor beneficial, they simply exist and do what they must do to propagate and survive. Occasionally, the existence of Mushi overlaps with the existence of other creatures in a way that causes conflict, so entities known as Mushi-shi who study these strange entities must step in to maintain the balance.
