She was the Shifting Expanse's revered exalted, a grave betrayal in her mind

It was a painful conclusion, that those she once called family, would abandon her in this way. Kineala was aware, that exaltation was an honor, the highest honor. She was also aware that it was almost never the case; dragons who broke the rules, defied the clan, the unwanted, in a sense, were the only ones who were exalted, and now she was one. An unwanted.

So she left.

In the silence of the night, she ran avoiding the the strikes of lightning. She mused that they were messengers of divine punishment from the Stormcatcher himself for abandoning her work, but she feared. No one knew what happened to the exalted, only that they leave the lair and serve the deities, but her skepticism prevented her from feeling honored. Science and logic didn't prove the existence of this so called "Shade" and there were no witnesses of fights against them. The beastclans were the more logical explanation of fights, but the Shade? No, Kineala didn't believe it.

She stumbled into wide open lands of Ashfall Waste, her large Imperial stature a wide target for any strikes. Fear gripped at her chest: she couldn't be found! Not now when she finally escaped the Shifting Expanse! Her fear caused her to pray, desperately to the Flamecaller. Let her escape be worthwhile! Alas it could not happen, the Stormcatcher held too much of a hold on her as lightning struck the heels of her hind legs and she fell. Deep into the bubbling pools of lava.

It was, however, not the end for her. When Kineala had opened her eyes she was warm, cozy, and everything looked bigger. She stood, tumbling back down as she lost control of her limbs. Tiny limbs that held feathers and not the bright scales she was so used to seeing. A coatl, she realized, she had been turned into a coatl!
