“You saw the spirit one night?” You asked the Pearlcatcher, watching her furiously scribble notes as she glanced up at the stars.

“Yes,” she sighed, setting down her pad, “I had heard about some rogue dragon terrorizing the chickens. I knew I needed to chase them off before she got to them.”

“‘She’?” You turned to look down the beach, towards the village. You only visited the clan for some simple trading, and instead found a ghost story, “Does the spirit live amongst you?”

“None of us are exactly sure,” Lacerta shrugged, “Even Bealsio has no idea where the spirit lurks. She only seems to manifest herself when someone threatens an avian creature, so we’ve become a clan that protects them. It’s a simple rule, really; don’t harm the birds.”

You thought back to the rogue, “And what becomes of the dragons who break this rule?”

The dragon before you gained a faraway look as she remembered that night, taking a deep breath, “I honestly couldn’t tell you, I arrived just as she did. One minute I saw the dragon and within the next they were whisked away in a flurry of violet feathers. The only mess to clean up was a hole in the fence the rogue had begun to tear, and the hay the chickens had scattered in their scrambling to get away from the stranger.”
