s t o r y The beasts cascade from the walls. To Mortuarie, they are her summons. To the crowd, they are Shade-afflicted intruders, a genuine threat. Mortuarie does not share the audience's concern, some of whom have begun to run for the exits. From the center ring's sigil, she raises a single claw. A beam of light exits the tip, no thicker than a strand of fur. She aims, though given the size of her targets, it is not a difficult task. When she hits the first beast, it squints briefly at its attacker before crumbling away suddenly, nothing more than now dust on the floor. Someone screams. Maybe it's the beast. Most likely, it's the audience. All the warnings in the world can't keep away the weak-willed. Their backbones are only strong enough to bear the burden of entering the tent, not dealing with what lies inside. She is quick on her claws, hitting every one of the false beasts in a clean arc. The sight is spectacular: when multiple erupt, they leave behind clouds of diamond dust that lingers longer than any firework these dragons have seen. "Beauty," she announces to the audience that remains, "means nothing without mortality. And sometimes, we need a reminder." She drums her claws, and the dust responds - like it always does, performance after performance. It settles into a mushroom-latticed jar that the tundra keeps at her side. The crowd erupts into applause, perhaps still genuinely under the illusion that there was any real danger present. Showmanship. Mortuatrie smiled and bowed. Sometimes, it was enough just knowing that if she so willed, she could strip every single member of the room into bone and sinew. |
