To the Seeker Order, I am sorry to have to report this, but there is grave, life-threatening danger that I must warn the Seeker order about. If you read no further, know this: the Scarred Wasteland is immensely dangerous for Seekers at this time, and you should under no circumstances go there. The situation is under control for the time being, and I would not put in danger more than have already been. Should this change, I will write again. When first my compatriots and I arrived in the Scarred Wasteland, nothing seemed amiss. We had, of course, heard the reports of our own going missing, so we began our investigation carefully. We covered every inch of the Wasteland in methodical investigations -- which, of course, took some time -- but quickly realized we would not be able to track the missing Seekers without information. It is when we decided to regroup that things began to go wrong. We were ambushed by a group of Gaolers with blood-red fur and massive, twisting horns. My dragons are capable, powerful fighters, but each and every one of them was overwhelmed in minutes by both the element of surprise and our attackers' sheer, otherworldly strength. It was over too quickly to try to learn who these dragons were, and we were captured and taken to a prison deep in the heart of the Wasteland. That is when the true horrors began. I will not say much, except that I would prefer never to speak about it again. I believe they were attempting to turn us into the same sorts of creatures that they had become. During this time, I learned what I had already suspected: these Gaolers, with their unnatural strength and their blood-red pelts, were the missing Seekers. They had no memories of their pasts, and no sense of loyalty to anything but their own order. They call themselves the "Carnage-Ichors," and they are nasty, violent, and exceedingly loyal to the Plaguebringer. The people they were before are entirely gone. I managed to escape, and I intend to free those dragons who still know themselves. I do not say this lightly: these Carnage-Ichors are not salvageable. Their memories have been taken from them and they care about nothing but violence and the Plaguebringer. The best we can do is attempt to recover our imprisoned comrades and return to the Southern Icefield safely. I would not advise ever sending Seekers to the Scarred Wasteland again; it is far too dangerous. Now that I am free of the prison, I will send missives as regularly as possible with updates on the situation. Until such a time that I ask for help, I beg that no more dragons be dispatched to this area. It is difficult enough to protect those that I brought; I will not be responsible for more deaths.
Leader of the Second Seekers,

About
When they crossed into the Scarred Wasteland in search of their lost comrades, Ruby was the leader of her group of Seekers. She commanded respect with her practical approach to problems and her quiet way of listening to all sides of the story, and those who followed her -- like her wife, Absalom -- trusted her implicitly. When they were captured by Carnage-Ichors and had brutal experiments done on them, Ruby is the one who took it the hardest. Dragons under her command had died -- and worse -- and she had not been able to do a single thing about it. She didn't even know what had happened to her wife until Absalom appeared one day to rescue Ruby from her cell. Now, Ruby lets Absalom take the lead; they intend to break out every remaining living Seeker so they can report back to the Icewarden, but Ruby doesn't entirely trust her own leadership anymore. After all, her leadership is what caused this situation in the first place. But she does trust Absalom, and she is determined to make up for the mistakes of her past, so she has taken up a tactical role in assisting Absalom's prison break. |

Loyalties
Ruby's loyalties remain where they have always been: with the Icewarden, the Seeker order, her lost comrades, and her wife. When Absalom rescued her from the Carnage-Ichor prison, Ruby's first instinct was to return to the Southern Icefield: warn the Icewarden and the rest of the Seekers, possibly bring back reinforcements. But Absalom convinced her to stay: they can always go back after they've rescued their fallen friends, but some of those friends won't be alive by the time they return. So Ruby stayed, and took up a tactical role. As much as she loves her wife, Absalom is no strategist. She is too idealistic, and Ruby quickly found that many of her ideas were based on impossible luck. Ruby has slowly been steering Absalom toward more pragmatic plans: rescuing only a few dragons at a time instead of staging a massive prison break, for example. It may take longer, but it will be safer in the long run for all of them. When Ruby does return to the Southern Icefield, she intends to resign from the Seeker order. She has caused enough harm in her failures as leader, and does not wish to cause more. |
