Cadenus

The scion of a line of conquerors, Cadenus Paracos was once king of a sizeable empire, ranging far into the northern mountains. King Cadenus wished to expand the borders of Nochtyx to cover all of the heavily-forested lands of Anaftis, and when his offer for annexation- which was admittedly less generous than the one given to the last territory absorbed into Nochtyx four centuries prior- was soundly rejected by every clan in Anaftis, Cadenus took the territories by sword.

Despite its relatively smaller size, the war with Anaftis was the costliest in Nochtyx’s history- a point that Cadenus famously denied as the war went on, citing that a collection of warlords and woods-witches whose only previous enemies were each other could not possibly deny the might of the North. However, numbers were far less likely to lie to the Nochtyx generals than the king, and tactics that were sound in the frigid mountains or tundra were obsolete or even actively detrimental in the thick forests and swamps of Anaftis.

Despite extracting their price in blood, Anaftis was conquered, and the Anaftis's Eyes were slain on the king's orders. With their dying breath, the last of the them cursed Cadenus- reduced to the form of a hatchling, to be forever hunted by Anaftis Forest's next incarnations as retribution for his crimes.
