Virgo focused on her palms. Surely she could do it… Just one curl of shadow would do… The Nocturne staring intently at the Imperial sighed.
“Fail. I’m sorry, Virgo, but you won’t be accepted into the Academy for Shadow Magic. I’d suggest learning a trade craft instead… Do you bake?” She groaned in response. Muck cooed confidently behind her, as if to say ’You make wonderful cookies!’ While she was thankful for the Ichor Nymph’s mindset, Virgo was quite unhappy. Now she would never learn shadow magic…

As the Imperial trudged away from the academy, down the cracked marble walkways of the Forum of the Obscured Crescent, thoughts bounced around her mind. There were reasonable opportunities for employment in her Clan. They dwelled in a rather large swath of the Forum and had restored it, finishing the broken buildings and creating a strong economy. Virgo would be able to find employment, though her parents wouldn’t be happy. She’d undoubtedly be kicked from their perfectionist household, not to be close to her perfect brother and sister. Virgo was so deep in her thoughts that she tripped over a loose bramble, tearing open the scales of her front right talon. She let a curse pass through her lips as she shook it out, spraying blood all over the stone.
“Maybe I don’t have to stay here. Surely some nice Clan will be willing to take me in?” She questioned aloud, earning an encouraging chirp from Muck. Wound forgotten, she righted herself and continued to walk home. Muck resettled himself on her shoulder blades, curling up or a nap. I’d be a horrible fit for a Plague Clan… not Light, of course. Perhaps Ice? Or Nature? She settled on her last decision. After all, the Viridian Labyrinth was just a short flight away. The brightness would take some getting used to, but she was tired of the Tangled Wood’s continuous depressing murk. Uneasy and excited at the same time, Virgo arrived on her doorstep, key in talon. She unlocked the door and pushed it open to see her parents giving her calculating stares.
“How’d it go?” Her father asked immediately.
“Bad. I didn’t make it in,” she replied in a quiet mumble, looking at her talons. Her mother snorted and fixed her with a stern glare.
“Of course you didn’t! You’re simply a waste of space.” The coatl’s harsh words struck at her heart. Why should I stay here?
“Then I’ll go,” she hissed in response, whirling around furiously. She could hear Muck wailing in despair, practically begging her to return or to at least take her things, but she ignored him. She wasted no time in taking to the skies, the bright green foliage of the Viridian Labyrinth her final destination. She craned her neck so that she could stare apologetically at Muck, who had his arms crossed and his snout tilted to the sky.
“Someone is bound to teach me magic in the Labyrinth, Muck. You’ll see.” The nymph stopped his acting and smiled at her, trilling quietly. Virgo turned back to the horizon, a smile on her face. Viridian Labyrinth, here I come!
