- Quiet conversations, claws clattering against paved walkways, feathers and membrane a dry rasp against drier walls. Life passes through and passes by, going around and around and around. Lowered eyes and reluctant words spoken into the eye of the storm, fearing it might turn its wrath on them but needing it to power their progress. Deliveries and letters and gossip and supplies and resentment; always moving, never stopping.

Mramor is not an easy dragon to get along with, this she knows. She’s made herself be that way on purpose. It’s enough for her to be indispensable; to be at the center of the web, the eye of the storm, the heart of the array. It’s enough. Pull Mramor away and the Sanctum would collapse under its own weight and momentum, a key cornerstone removed. She did that on purpose, too. Oh, the scholars might think they’re untouchable among their papers as they carry out their divine task, and the guard may think his claws and hunger can ravage any threat that dares to face them, but without Mramor, without food, without supplies, without tools, without connections, without blackmail and deals and diplomacy… without those, the Sanctum would be crushed and ground to dust like grain in a mill. So they need her; will never be able to oust her, not without spelling their own doom. Mramor has made sure of that. She has ensured they will never be able to toss her aside, leave her and hurt her. (Not again, never again, her heart is her own now and she will never risk it again; she has walked that road before and it led to nothing but pain.) It is enough. (It has to be enough.) |
