Biography
The only successful infiltrator to Saurinna's inner circle... because noone saw him coming.
Ambush predators or sit-and-wait predators are carnivorous animals that capture or trap prey by stealth or by strategy (typically not conscious), rather than by speed or by strength. Ambush predators sit and wait for prey, often from a concealed position, and then launch a rapid surprise attack.

The Doll and the Wanderer
Mantis stared at the doll in his grasp. How could he be so careless, leaving this fragile, valuable thing where it could be stepped on or thrown away? Had he gotten rusty? Perhaps. Perhaps he simply grew too accustomed to his new gift. He moved as silently as ever, but where he once never left a trace he now left this cursed item for all to see. Fortunately, only a few members of the clan spotted it, likely assuming it was simply a doll left behind by a hatchling, and only one had touched it before he realized what he’d done. Rhadan shivered. Somehow, he always felt cold. A chilling sensation of something watching him, following him, maybe even hunting him constantly plagued him. He felt as if he’d seen something he shouldn’t have. That doll. He knew that doll was the source, somehow. Having stumbled upon it laying inconspicuously on the ground, he’d thought a hatchling had lost it and picked it up. But the moment he touched the cursed thing, a frigid jolt ran through his body. His vision went black, every muscle in his body tightened at once, and screaming rang loud in his mind. Was that his own scream, or was it someone else? He couldn’t tell. It took but a moment for the terrifying sensation to pass, but it was enough time to thoroughly frighten him out of his mind. Dazed, he lay still, pearl rolling in the dirt beside him, trying to process what had occurred and think through the fear. He thought he heard something like frantic steps racing towards him. Help, perhaps? Did someone see him collapse? Did someone hear him scream? Did he even scream? But no. No helping paw came to pull him to his feet. The rush of footsteps came and stopped and began again, only this time running away and leaving him there. When he finally managed to rise and look, the bare earth lay plain before him, unmarred by any objects or footprints. The toy was gone. |
Was it useful? No, probably not. He snorted at the witch’s attempt to reassure the other Pearlcatcher. Yes, he had been rather careless with the doll, but he was no hatchling. Yet the witch brought up valid concerns. The illness, the small and unattended issues with Saurinna’s children, and medicines and supplies needed, among other things. ‘Hm, she’s smart,’ Mantis thought. He grinned. ‘Maybe… maybe this is useful… At least, it’s worth a shot.’ Besides, she seemed like someone worthy of a visit from him and, perhaps, someone who he could toy with. After all, she’d never see him coming. Eponia hobbled across the clan’s lair, crossing from the meeting place to her quarters. Other important, high-ranking dragons surrounded her, departing from the brief meeting just minutes before. Some clan members had concerns about something or other. As per usual, she thought most of the claims were rather stupid. Especially that narcissistic idiot Rhadan rambling something about a strange doll he’d come upon one night. It took all the self-control she had to keep from snorting and rolling her eyes. In the end, she merely assured him a careless hatchling had forgotten it. There were more important things to discuss, anyway… Once home, she sighed. There was work to be done, cures to be found, and the meeting had taken valuable time out of her day. The strange sickness brought by the Unnamed and the small Snapper child posed an unknown, unmeasured threat to the clan. It was a mystery that Saurinna herself asked Eponia to solve and cure. But it was hard. Even with her age and experience, she’d never seen an illness such as this before. It hadn’t spread, yet, but she feared it might. Perhaps it already did… A chill slithered up her spine. The feeling of being watched from everywhere all at once struck her suddenly. She realized, frighteningly, that she’d mumbled all of this out loud. Then, she saw it. In the corner, just barely visible, a little tinder toy floated several centimeters off of the ground. She sucked in a breath. She blinked once. She froze, eyes widening. The spot was bare as it always was. The toy was gone. |

Soon… “Hello, Atahwasa, sir, Akantha, Aletheia, Devourer,” Mantis greeted the moment the Mirrors and Nocturne stepped into the room. “Your loyal spy has returned, and I think you’ll quite like what I’ve found…” |
