Dragons in the Shifting Expanse are known for their dedication in their jobs, and this lightning dragon was no different. She seems to exhaust even the spirit she protects, which was no easy task. Whether it be paperwork, mechanics, magical duties… she’d work on it dutifully and carefully, always making sure the product turns out as the best of the best. She herself is almost like a spirit, with how efficient she is. A dragon much fit to protect over this spirit, who she has now dedicated as her “newest gig”.

Now, if only he would actually stay awake while she was lecturing him...

Batting away the biting flies with her wings, the large guardian did her best to cool off under the shade of looming trees. She disliked summer, and anyone who disagreed was crazy. She had begun her search just as the earth began to unthaw in the change of winter, and now she was moving at a sluggish pace in the heat. It was true that finding one's charge was something that could easily take years, and currently Rapu quietly cursed those who found theirs within months.

Though her charge wasn’t as simple as others, she was required to seek out those destined to be protectors similar to herself. Despite the uncomfortability of the weather, she was convinced it would be worth all the trouble.Somewhat like solving a puzzle that had been giving you a headache. However finding Kili was more of starting a puzzle than finishing one.

“Pardon?” A young ridgeback looked to the stranger before her with her brow furrowed. She had heard of Guardians and their charges, but to hear that she was this woman’s charge in a way was ridiculous.

“I understand it can be a hard concept to grasp, but just listen,” Sitting, the larger dragon drew in a breath before she continued. “You’re young, but have been searching for a purpose. Yet no matter what you try, nothing feels right. You can stop me if I’m mistaken, but I'm quite certain I’m not.”

The cerulean ridgeback opened her mouth to speak, though she only let out a short exhale. She wanted to tell her she was wrong, but it was true. She felt as if she forever had an itch she couldn’t scratch, traveling around the Shifting expanse in search of something… anything that gave her meaning.

Her silence made the guardian smile, she could see on the others face that she was trying to make sense of how she knew.

“Let’s start here; I’m Rapu and we have much to discuss.”

Discovering she was to be a protector and in a way, had a charge of her own, was a lot to take in. Though it did give her the sense of purpose she had been searching for. The training her new mentor gave her tested her physically and mentally, between sparring sessions or answering hypothetical questions, Rapu was relentless. She was expected to be ready to fill the role of protector by the end of their journey to meet Kili’s charge, an embodiment of lightning they had been called. It wasn’t as much time as the guardian wanted for preparation, but she made it work.

“What if I fail?”

The question caught the older off guard as she settled beside the warm glow of their fire. “What?”

“What if I’m not ready by the time we get there?” The ridgeback laid on her back, watching as embers twirled up into the air before disappearing into the night sky.

“You will be.”

“How are you so sure?”

The guardian paused, taking a moment before she answered.

“What makes you so unsure?” She looked to Kili, who had now sat up to meet her gaze across the flames. “Have confidence, you’re more ready than you think. There are few who would have gotten this far, yet you continue to amazing me."

The sincerity of her mentor now had caught the younger off guard, she had never praised her so forwardly before. Though the feeling of pride that filled her chest was undeniable.

"Don't get a big head now, it's already big enough. Good night, we have ground to cover tomorrow."

As the duo trudged onwards, Rapu noticed a change in her student. The girl was focused, determined and often needed to be reminded to take breaks. It was clear a fire had been lit within her, any hesitation that once lingered in Kili’s judgments was replaced with the confidence of a true representative guard. The two had grown close, the bond of mentor and student was something Rapu took seriously. She cared for each and every one of the dragons she trained and brought to their respective charges. Perhaps it was just her genetic coding of a guardian that made her view her charges so fondly, or maybe it was the pride she felt in steering their futures in the right direction. Whatever the reason, Rapu wouldn’t give her role as mentor for anything.

Kili grumbled to herself as she cleared away rocks and sticks with her tail, sweeping them from where the two dragons were planning to camp for the night. They were so close to their destination, they could arrive before sunrise if only Rapu wasn’t insistent on resting then continuing in the morning. She knew better than to argue with her mentor, so instead of protest the ridgeback kept her opinions to herself while prepping their campsite .

“Kili,” Rapu’s voice pulled the younger away from her thoughts, and pausing in her task did she look up to her mentor. In the guardian’s hands rested a bundle of fabric, though what exactly it was Kili couldn’t quite tell. She opened her mouth to question, but before she could speak Rapu raised a hand to stop her;

“When I met you, I wondered if I was wrong in thinking you were to be a guard.” The older dragon ran her hand over the fabric, brushing away a fold to reveal a beautiful medallion bearing the sigil of the Stormcatcher. “You were so unsure, both of me and yourself.” Kili drew closer, then Rapu continued;

“But you have grown so much since then, and now without a doubt in my mind do I know that this is who you truly are. I am proud of you, and with pride you will wear this.” Kili opened her hands to take the sash, the cerulean color shimmered in the fading light of the sun. Feeling a lump in her throat as she looked up to meet Rapu’s warm gaze, not having expected this type of emotional ceremonial graduation. Resting her hand on her students shoulder, the guardian smiled as she spoke;

“With this gift, you are Kili; guardian of lightning.”
